My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 268

Isabella Austin’s smile looked forced. “What exactly are you doing?”

Emily Blair rubbed her sore wrist, then lifted her gaze—right into a pair of striking, dark eyes.

Out of the corner of her eye, Emily noticed Andrew Lane holding one of Isabella Austin’s framed certificates.

She calmly looked away from him and turned to Isabella, about to speak, when Alex White abruptly spun around, his voice tense. “Aren’t you leaving?”

Emily let out a short, dry laugh. “You want me gone, but I think someone here would rather I stay.”

Alex’s tone hardened. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Emily stepped past him, eyes on Isabella. “I need to speak to you. Alone.”

The moment she said it, Alex moved protectively in front of Isabella, like a mother hen guarding her chick.

“Emily, what are you trying to pull?”

Even Andrew Lane’s brows furrowed as he shot Emily a cold, sharp look.

Facing the three of them lined up like a tribunal, Emily almost looked like the villain of the story.

Isabella inched closer to Andrew, her slender fingers clutching the edge of his jacket. She shrank behind him, eyes wary and wounded as she glanced at Emily.

Emily ignored the two men, focusing only on Isabella. “Don’t you have anything to say to me about Larry Mitchell?”

Isabella’s face paled, something unreadable flickering in her eyes before she pressed her lips together and stayed silent.

Emily caught that brief flash in her gaze and smirked inwardly.

Alex’s laugh was biting, his words cold. “Emily, if you got yourself mixed up in shady business, that’s your problem. Don’t drag Isabella into it. Take it up with whoever’s actually involved.”

Compared to Alex, Andrew was even more dismissive; he treated Emily as if she were invisible.

He drew Isabella against his side and spoke in a low, gentle voice. “Go rest. I’ll take care of everything else.”
