He’d originally been attracted to that woman’s body and pretty face, so he’d let her bully the girl—planning to swoop in at the last minute, play the hero, and win her gratitude. With any luck, she’d end up in his bed.
But now, all he wanted was to slap his past self.
What kind of fool had he been, even thinking about putting his hands on Andrew Lane’s sister? That was a death wish if there ever was one.
Thankfully, he hadn’t actually done anything yet. Things hadn’t spiraled out of control, and, after all, he hadn’t started it. Maybe if he sat down with Mr. Lane, explained things, and pinned the blame on that foolish woman—offered up a sincere apology—he might just get away with it.
The woman looked panicked, her eyes wide in terror. She fumbled for her phone, typing “Mr. Lane” into the search bar. Instantly, pages of information and photos flooded the screen.
Her trembling finger tapped the top result. Line after line of impressive credentials and business achievements scrolled past, making her dizzy. When she saw the list of nationally renowned companies under Andrew Lane’s name, her vision went black for a second.
She locked her phone and rushed to grab Mr. Green’s arm. “No, that can’t be—he’s so powerful, there’s no way he’d care about a hospital director like you. Worst case, we just go and beg him, apologize to his sister. He won’t really hold a grudge, will he?”
Mr. Green’s eyes flickered, his voice low and stern. “If I’d known things would turn out like this, I’d have never brought you into the city. Now you’ve dragged me down with you. I think you’d better just go back to your village and stop embarrassing yourself here. If Mr. Lane decides to take revenge, don’t expect me to help you.”
The woman’s face drained of color. “No, Uncle, I know I was wrong! I really do—I’ll do whatever you say, just don’t abandon me. Please, I don’t want to go back. I can’t go back.”
Mr. Green shook off her hand, his gaze cold. “There’s nothing I can do for you now. We’ve already crossed the line, and I can barely protect myself—let alone you. Book yourself a ticket home. Don’t stick around here.”
