She glanced at Andrew Lane, then quickly looked away and pushed herself forward in the wheelchair, her hands turning the wheels.
Andrew strolled over at a leisurely pace, just as unhurried as before. With a deft motion, he gently pried her hands off the wheelchair and took hold of the handles himself.
Emily Blair’s brow twitched slightly. She didn’t miss the fleeting stiffness that flashed across Isabella Austin’s face as Andrew made his move.
She didn’t stop him. After all, she’d already worn herself out earlier, and with Andrew offering his help for free, she really had no interest in exerting herself any further.
Isabella smiled, brushing a stray strand of hair behind her ear as she walked over. “Let me take over.”
Emily turned her head slightly, catching in her peripheral vision the way Isabella’s hand reached right for Andrew’s, her palm coming to rest lightly on the back of his hand.
Andrew didn’t pull away. Isabella’s thumb gently rubbed his hand as she spoke in a soft tone, “Really, let me do it.”
After a moment, Andrew’s fingers twitched and he released his grip. “Alright.”
Isabella smoothly took the handles and wheeled Emily over to the bed.
Emily pushed herself up in silence. Isabella steadied her, hands gentle but firm, and spoke as she helped her sit on the edge of the mattress.
“Andrew and I have both been busy lately, which is why we could only come by so late. Honestly, we just wanted to try our luck and see if you were still awake. I didn’t expect to walk in and find someone picking on you. If we’d come earlier, maybe you wouldn’t have had to go through that. I hope you don’t mind.”
Emily shot Isabella a quick glance. Her eyes were apologetic, her tone warm and sincere, and she even put a bit more strength into helping Emily get settled, as if genuinely regretful.
But Emily knew Isabella too well. For her to truly apologize from the heart was nearly impossible.
Sure enough, as soon as Emily was seated on the bed, Isabella shot Andrew a slightly embarrassed look and pressed her lips together. “It’s my fault, really. I hardly ate any dinner and got a little dizzy—low blood sugar, you know. I would have been fine with a bit of chocolate, but Andrew insisted on taking me to see a doctor, and that’s what delayed us. That’s why we’re only just now getting here.”
Emily looked up at Andrew.
