She couldn’t help but scoff inwardly. Andrew Lane’s words clearly carried weight—enough to force someone into something so humiliating.
“Mr. Lane, Ms. Lane, I’ve brought the kettle,” Mr. Green announced, stepping into the room. “There’s plenty of warm water inside, just the right temperature. Ms. Lane, you won’t need to wait for it to cool before you drink.”
“And the floor in the utility room,” he continued, “we’ve cleaned it thoroughly, just as Mr. Lane requested. If Mr. Lane and Ms. Blair would like to take a look, you’ll find it spotless.”
He smiled as he worked, opening the kettle and pouring a gentle stream of warm water into the glass on the bedside table. He replaced the lid with practiced care, then turned and offered the glass to Emily Blair with both hands.
“I hope you’ll forgive me, Ms. Blair,” Mr. Green said, his voice apologetic. “My niece and her son behaved foolishly just now and upset you. I was only worried when I saw my great-nephew crying and reacted poorly. Please accept my apologies, both of you.”
Emily met his gaze. Mr. Green’s sharp eyes were laced with sincerity, but beneath the surface, she could see the practiced calculation of someone used to maneuvering through difficult situations. Her brow furrowed.
She glanced toward the woman and the little boy huddled in the corner by the door. Neither dared approach. Their clothes were dirty, but the woman’s were far worse than the boy’s.
The woman looked nervous, shoulders hunched, her eyes darting anxiously. Gone was the arrogant bravado from earlier. Her unruly son, who had been so bold before, was now hiding behind her, clutching at her trousers with trembling hands.
Emily was parched. She took the glass from Mr. Green and drank deeply.
Mr. Green smiled with relief when he saw her drink, straightening up. “I suppose neither Mr. Lane nor Ms. Blair have children, so you might not understand a relative’s worry. When you see your own child crying like that, it’s only natural to be concerned. That’s why I was slow to stop my niece’s behavior. I do hope you’ll both forgive us.”
