When she heard the answer, the girl on the other end went quiet for a moment, then raised her voice, “How could you not be Emily Blair? That’s impossible! This is the number—I’ve checked it several times. I didn’t dial wrong!”
As she spoke, the background noise on the line grew louder, probably because the group of girls had started whispering among themselves.
Emily Blair’s frown deepened as she caught snippets of their hushed conversation.
“If she’s not Emily Blair, did we get the wrong person?”
“No, this is the number we found.”
“But she said she isn’t Emily Blair!”
“How could she not be? She’s probably just guilty and afraid we’ll call her out, so she’s denying it.”
“But if she really isn’t, aren’t we yelling at the wrong person?”
While she was mulling this over, another unknown call came through. Emily declined it, then returned to the first call and asked, “Who is Emily Blair?”
On the other end, the girl practically screeched, “What did you just say? You don’t know Emily Blair? Have you never used the internet?”
It sounded like someone snatched the phone from her, their tone turning furious.
“It doesn’t matter if you know or not—we’ll tell you. All you need to know is Emily Blair is a total bitch. She’s always bullying other girls, even drove someone to depression. When things blew up, she just hid behind everyone else and refused to respond. She’s got the thickest skin I’ve ever seen!”
