Despite the relentless barrage of phone calls—each one either going unanswered or automatically disconnected when she didn't pick up—Emily Blair’s phone only vibrated quietly on the nightstand, never making much sound.
When morning finally crept in, Emily opened her eyes slowly, blinking away sleep as she stared at the pale, plain wall. She rubbed the back of her neck, slipped her feet into her slippers, and reached for her crutch, steadying herself as she made her way to the bathroom. Sticking to her usual, unhurried pace, she washed up and returned to her hospital room, where the housekeeper was already waiting, punctual as always, with breakfast.
“Good morning, Ms. Blair. Breakfast is ready whenever you are,” the woman greeted her, glancing over her shoulder with a gentle smile.
Emily nodded, her gaze settling on the tray of breakfast set out on the small table by her bed. The meal was just as plentiful as it was every morning. She made her way over, careful on her crutch, while the housekeeper finished arranging the food and came over to help her sit down on the bed.
No sooner had Emily picked up her spoon than the woman handed her phone to her. “Ms. Blair, you should check your phone. While you were in the bathroom, several people called you. I didn’t answer—each call hung up after a while. You might want to see who it was.”
The housekeeper’s expression suggested she was holding something back.
Emily set down her spoon and took the phone. The screen lit up, and for a moment, her mind went blank at the sight of the endless list of missed calls.
Her brow furrowed. Immediately, she sensed something was wrong and tapped into her call log.
Starting around 4:30 a.m., Arianna George, Elizabeth Wilson, and a slew of others—including her teachers—had each called her over ten times. Arianna and Elizabeth’s numbers, in particular, popped up forty or fifty times apiece.
Even just moments ago, she’d missed a dozen calls from unfamiliar numbers, all from different area codes. Judging by the time stamps, each caller had waited until the line disconnected on its own.
