As soon as the words left her lips, Emily Blair paused mid-step, straightening her back.
The housekeeper, hopeful for a change, fixed her gaze intently on Emily’s face.
Emily gently slipped her arm from the woman’s grasp and turned her head, her eyes calm and detached as she looked at the older woman.
Emily had striking eyes—clear, deep, almost startling in their purity. Most of the time, her gaze seemed open, almost innocent, and undeniably beautiful.
But now, for reasons the housekeeper couldn’t quite place, those same eyes made her heart skip. Suddenly, she found herself unable to meet Emily’s gaze, her pulse quickening with unease.
Her voice trembled with pleading. “Ms. Blair, would you please let me come with you? I promise I won’t—”
“Auntie,” Emily interrupted softly, her tone flat. “I told Andrew Lane a long time ago that I didn’t need anyone looking after me. But he insisted, and when you arrived, I didn’t make a fuss—after all, you’re just doing your job, and none of this is really up to you.”
She continued, “And I know you call Andrew Lane every day, telling him all about me. I’m aware of that, too, but I never brought it up. I figured I was already being more than fair.”
The housekeeper’s face stiffened, a flicker of embarrassment in her eyes.
“I’m not making things hard for you. Please don’t make things hard for me, either. You must realize by now that my relationship with Andrew Lane isn’t exactly… warm. I don’t want him monitoring my every move, or someone shadowing me every time I step outside. I don’t like it. In fact, I hate it.”
“So, please—go home. Don’t follow me anymore.”
With that, Emily said nothing more. She leaned on her cane and walked toward the elevator.
The housekeeper’s eyes widened, and she called after Emily’s retreating figure, “Or—Ms. Blair, could you at least tell me where you’re going?”
She was sure Emily had heard her—the people ahead all turned at her raised voice. There was no way Emily could have missed it.
