“Go ahead.”
The housekeeper glanced around nervously, cupping her hand over the phone as she lowered her voice. “Mr. Lane, something felt off since this morning. Ms. Blair’s phone has been buzzing nonstop—all these calls from numbers I’ve never seen before.”
“I asked Ms. Blair about it, but she wouldn’t really explain,” she added, casting a wary glance down the hallway to make sure Emily Blair was well out of earshot. Only when she was certain Emily had disappeared did she continue, her tone growing even more anxious.
“There were so many calls, Mr. Lane. And they just kept coming. Ms. Blair kept blocking them, but it was like a game of whack-a-mole—she couldn’t keep up. I started to think maybe it’s one of those phone scams. You know, the kind that tries to trick people out of their money. But Ms. Blair is just a high school kid—how much money could she possibly have? Whatever she does have, her parents and family worked hard for it. If she got scammed, it would be terrible. I tried to convince her to take this seriously, and I wanted to help, but every time I asked her anything, she just clammed up.”
“That’s why I was hoping Ms. Blair would reach out to you for help. I talked to her for ages—my mouth was practically dry from all the persuading—but she still wouldn’t contact you. I can’t just stand by and watch her get taken advantage of, so I decided to call you myself. What do you think we should do?”
She rattled off her worries in a breathless rush, finally pausing to catch her breath.
Had Emily Blair been there to listen, she probably would have burst out laughing.
Even now, the housekeeper still believed all those strange calls were nothing more than phone scams.
She waited for Andrew Lane to respond with the seriousness the situation seemed to demand. Instead, his tone was remarkably casual.
“I understand.”
The housekeeper blinked, taken aback by his indifference. She pressed on, voice firm. “Mr. Lane, I really think this is important. I just saw Ms. Blair online—people are sharing her phone number everywhere. That means loads of scammers must have her private information by now. And you know how clever those people can be. The police always say scammers tailor their tricks to each person’s details. It’s dangerous for Ms. Blair, and I really think this needs to be sorted out soon.”
“And besides, Ms. Blair just went out—she’s all alone. What if another scam call comes through? She’s just a student. How is she supposed to handle something like this? I’ve heard from so many people that once your money’s gone, the police can’t get it back. Isn’t that right?”
Andrew Lane only responded with a noncommittal “Mm,” offering nothing more.
