Emily’s lips trembled.
“I understand…”
After hanging up, she immediately dialed Ms. Carter. As expected, Ms. Carter launched into a rapid-fire string of anxious words, the gist of which was simple: delete the post right now and come back to school so they could discuss things calmly. She pleaded with Emily to give the school a chance, to avoid getting expelled.
Emily listened in silence, stubborn as a mule. “Ms. Carter, I’m not deleting the post.”
Ms. Carter sounded exhausted, defeated—a deep, helpless frustration lacing her voice. “Emily, do you remember you still have your college entrance exams? Are you really going to throw all of that away?”
Emily had expected both Ms. Carter and Arianna George to oppose her decision, so she’d chosen to act first and inform them after the fact. Still, even this “after the fact” conversation was nearly impossible for her to get through.
Her fingers trembled slightly as she lowered her gaze. Her voice was barely above a whisper. “Ms. Carter, you’ve always said I’m decisive. So please, trust me. I have a plan for my future. I won’t let myself miss the exams. I’ll keep studying.”
“It’s just…” Emily hesitated. “There’s too much happening here. I don’t want to waste any more energy on all this chaos. I just want to… get away for a while, so I can focus on what really matters. Once I’ve settled in and things calm down, I’ll call you, okay?”
Her heart pounded so hard she could barely speak; her palms were slick with sweat.
After a long pause, Ms. Carter sighed. “Emily, maybe this really is for the best. I wish I could do more for you, but all I want is for you to be alright.”
At the very least, she hoped Emily could live simply, like any other high school kid—just a little bit of peace, a little bit of youth.
Not like this: trapped in a storm of online rumors and forced to apologize to someone else’s mistakes.
Emily felt something sharp pierce her heart. Her voice quivered. “Don’t worry, Ms. Carter. I promise I’ll be just fine. Really.”
After hanging up, she sat there, stunned, unable to collect her thoughts.
This was the boldest decision she’d ever made—across two lifetimes.
She had no idea what lay ahead. Maybe the road would be smooth, or maybe it’d be even rougher than what she was leaving behind. No one could say.
She’d told everyone she had it all figured out, that she was prepared, that her future would be so much brighter than her present.
But if she was honest, even Emily didn’t know what her future would look like.
