Emily Blair could barely breathe as Ethan Lane’s hands tightened around her throat, yet somehow, she still managed a delirious smile.
“Ethan Lane, just look at yourself,” she taunted, her voice hoarse but mocking. “You really are the perfect lovesick fool, aren’t you?”
She laughed, though her laughter was brittle. “You’ve chased after Isabella Austin for years—what did it ever get you? Are you planning to sit back and watch her and Andrew Lane grow old together?”
Ethan glared at her, his breath coming in harsh, ragged bursts. “Don’t you dare say another word!”
She met his furious eyes with a look of feigned pity, every bit of it insincere.
What a shame, she thought. Ethan would never know that one day, he’d end up dying for the sake of Isabella Austin’s and Andrew Lane’s child. In the end, he’d have nothing at all to show for it.
This world, it seemed, revolved entirely around Isabella Austin, as if she were the star of her own story. Everyone loved her. Everyone was willing to sacrifice everything for her. Even Andrew Lane, usually so proud and aloof, and Ethan Lane, steadfast and devoted, both hung on her every word, their loyalty unwavering.
A true leading lady, if ever there was one.
And Emily? She was little more than a supporting character in Isabella’s story—someone destined to be cast aside and trampled underfoot.
But she refused to let it end that way. Not now. Not ever. Not when Daisy was counting on her. She would make them all pay for what they’d done.
Suddenly, Ethan’s expression shifted. He released her, forcing a cold, brittle smile. “Emily Blair, I won’t allow you to stay with the Lane family any longer.”
Emily shot him a scornful look. “That suits me just fine.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed, and his grip tightened once more.
Emily’s face flushed red, breath growing shallow, but she stubbornly held his gaze, refusing to back down.
“What on earth is going on here?!”
The furious shout from Grandpa Kevin cut through the tension like a blade. Ethan instantly let go.
Air flooded back into Emily’s lungs. She staggered, clutching the wall, gasping for breath.
