Especially when it came to matters like this.
They were the real family. She and Emma George were outsiders.
In the end, Emily Blair simply steadied her breathing and said quietly, “I understand. I’ll move out today.”
Grandpa Kevin only nodded, offering no further words before leaving the room.
Behind her, Emma George wrung her hands, distressed. “Emily, what are you doing? Couldn’t you have tried saying something nice? Mr. Lane is soft-hearted—he always ends up letting you stay. There’s no way he’d really throw you out.”
Emily glanced at the servants lingering nearby, reading the mix of pity and schadenfreude in their eyes.
“So, you already knew what’s been going on lately?”
Emma George fell instantly silent.
Emily turned, her gaze cold and unwavering. “Then why didn’t you stand up for me? Not even a word of comfort?”
Emma opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
Suddenly, Emily smiled. “It’s all right, Mom. I forgive you. I know you’re intimidated by the Lane family’s power. You’re afraid to speak up for me—I get it.”
Emma’s tension melted, and she let out a light laugh. “As long as you understand. It’s not like you’re seriously hurt. If you just do what Mr. Lane says, there shouldn’t be any trouble.”
Emily’s voice was steady, almost too calm. “But what if next time, they want my life instead? Would you be able to stop them? Or fight for me then?”
Emma’s smile froze on her lips.
Emily stepped away, heading for her room. “So if you’d prefer I don’t end up dead, you should pack your things and move out with me.”
She wasted no time gathering her belongings, moving with swift, practiced hands—she wanted nothing more than to leave.
Emma George, whether out of sudden realization or simply having no other choice, also retreated to her room to pack. Either way, getting away from this place was a blessing.
