My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 388

Some things, Andrew Lane simply had to experience for himself to truly understand what was best for him—what kind of woman would actually help his future. Kevin Lane had been young once too; he understood the arrogance of youth. Sometimes, you had to let a young man crash headlong into a wall before he’d learn his lesson.

Emily Blair was, after all, just an ordinary woman. She wasn’t going to stir up any real trouble.

Kevin Lane spoke in a low, steady voice, naming a location. “Go see her,” he said. “If you wait any longer, it’ll be too late.”

As soon as Andrew got the address, he turned and strode out. Kevin’s clouded eyes never left his grandson’s retreating figure. He nodded to himself, satisfied. Good. Andrew might care about Emily’s departure, but he hadn’t lost his composure. Even if he was angry—far from his usual calm—he’d kept his head.

That probably meant Emily Blair didn’t matter all that much to him after all.

He remembered when Isabella Austin had posted her statement online, claiming she was struggling with depression. Andrew’s face had changed instantly—thunderous, almost as if a storm was about to break over the whole estate. Back then, they’d both been at The Lane Estate, hosting a dinner for old family friends. Andrew hadn’t hesitated; he’d grabbed his coat and rushed out in front of everyone, saying only that he had to find Isabella.

It hadn’t been the most polite or measured response, but Isabella was his fiancée—and, by then, carrying The Lane Family’s child. Andrew’s actions were understandable, even if they broke protocol.

Compared to Emily Blair, it was clear that Andrew valued Isabella Austin much more, especially when it came to his future. Their relationship had always been strong; a happy match in the end.

The butler shuffled up behind him, stooping as he walked, and murmured, “Sir, are you sure it’s all right to let Mr. Lane go after Miss Blair? What if he actually brings her back?”

A cold glint flickered in Kevin Lane’s eyes. He paused, then let out a low, mirthless chuckle. “If Emily Blair really tries to come back, she’ll have no one to blame but herself.”

He and Emily had made a deal long ago: he’d help her leave, and in return, she’d never bother Andrew again. Kevin had done everything he promised. If she went back on her word, he wasn’t obligated to show any mercy.
