My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 399

Emily Blair rotated her ankle, entirely unconcerned with what Maxwell Perez thought of her right now.

If she were a high school principal facing a situation like this, she’d probably think the person in front of her was out of their mind, too.

That was exactly why she had all the patience in the world for Maxwell Perez to come around to her suggestion.

She took a step forward, and Maxwell Perez’s frown deepened.

“Move along. If you don’t leave, I’ll call your parents.”

Calling a student’s parents was a tried-and-true tactic—one Maxwell had used more times than he could count, and it almost always got results.

But he hadn’t expected the girl in front of him to flash a bright smile and say, “Principal, I actually came here with my mom today. She’s waiting just outside your office. Would you like to meet her?”

Maxwell Perez was momentarily lost for words.

“Out, out, out!” he finally snapped, waving his hand in exasperation. “If you don’t leave now, I’ll have to call security.”

“Wait, at least hear me out,” Emily said, her voice light and clear.

Maxwell looked at the girl, wondering if he was losing his mind for even considering what she might say.

Emily continued, her tone almost musical. “I noticed your students are all taking their midterms. How about this: let me take the exams, too. If I score the highest, you let me enroll. If I don’t come in first, I’ll never bother you again. Not a bad deal for the school, right? All you’d need to do is give me a few test papers and answer sheets.”

Maxwell’s gaze darkened as he studied her.

He couldn’t deny it—she almost had him convinced.
