During that time, she kept her head down, entirely absorbed in her exam paper, her focus so complete that she paid no mind to the expressions or reactions of anyone around her.
As a result, she completely missed the shifting look on Maxwell Perez’s face.
Maxwell Perez could hardly believe what he was seeing.
This round of monthly exams used test papers from a joint examination with several neighboring cities—papers so difficult they seemed almost insurmountable. Today was the last day of the exams, and the next-to-last subject remained.
Teachers like him could only watch helplessly as their students were tortured by the barrage of tricky questions—tugging at their hair, picking at their skin, utterly stumped, their faces etched with worry and defeat.
The faculty had reviewed the papers in advance; every subject was tough. As a math teacher, Maxwell had been floored by the science track’s math exam. There was no need to speculate—he already knew the school’s average math score would be abysmal.
Their students weren’t known for stellar results. Most had scored in the lower-middle range on their high school entrance exams, and their school’s reputation, at least by the capital’s standards, left much to be desired. It was certain the average score for this round of practice exams wouldn’t be something to brag about.
Even Maxwell himself had needed every ounce of brainpower to finish the paper. The other math teachers agreed: this was the hardest math exam so far in recent memory.
And yet, there was still that one student the school had aggressively recruited—a girl who’d ranked second overall in the entrance exams. Exceptionally bright, she typically scored around 680 points in practice tests, a real standout.
She was the school’s ace-in-the-hole, their secret weapon. The administration had promised that if she could break into the top ten in the national college entrance exams, she’d earn an extra $100,000 as a reward.
After the math exam, a teacher had gone to ask her how it went. She replied that it was tough, but not impossible.
