Emily Blair patiently repeated herself, her tone as gentle as ever.
It was only then that Maxwell Perez snapped out of his daze. “N-no need to say it again—I’ll grade your math right now. For the other subjects, you'll have to wait until the rest of the teachers are free. Class is almost over anyway.”
Emily rested her chin in her hand, watching as Maxwell picked up his red pen and started marking her answers, one careful check at a time.
Each question, big and small, got a neat tick. Not a single mistake.
Emily had expected as much. She didn’t look the least bit surprised.
Maxwell stared at the perfectly worked-out solutions in his hand, finally convinced that Emily was the real deal.
He was only a math teacher and didn’t know much about the other subjects, but glancing over Emily’s answers in those too, he had a strong hunch she’d aced them all.
A thrill bubbled up inside him. The more he looked at Emily, the more delighted he felt.
Who would’ve thought? Sometimes good fortune really did fall from the sky. He’d somehow lucked into a student whose grades outshone even those transfer students the school spent a fortune to recruit.
It was almost too good to believe.
If Emily represented their school in the upcoming regional exams, their results would be off the charts. The top spot in the entrance exam—No. 1—might be within their grasp.
Not that he let any of that show. Maxwell kept his expression strictly serious; after all, Emily was sitting right across from him, and as her teacher, he had to maintain a certain dignity.
Still, Emily noticed how his face shifted—excited one moment, stern the next, and then, barely able to keep the corners of his mouth from twitching upward, he just couldn’t hold back a grin.
