Maxwell Perez’s hand, halfway to accepting the stack of documents, froze in midair. His eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at Emily Blair. “I’m sorry—what did you just say?”
The teachers nearby were also caught off guard. They turned, curiosity and confusion flickering across their faces as they looked at Emily.
Emily smiled politely, her voice calm and clear. “I said, after I enroll, I’d like permission to study independently off-campus. I’d prefer not to attend classes in person.”
Maxwell finally processed her words, and his gentle, welcoming demeanor vanished in an instant, replaced by a stern seriousness. He now looked at Emily as if she’d transformed into a delinquent—a lazy, unmotivated student who wanted to take the easy way out. There was disappointment in his eyes, a kind he could hardly conceal.
In his mind, Emily Blair was supposed to be the model student: attentive in class, respectful of the rules, diligent, grounded—the sort of girl who set an example for everyone else. For someone like her to suddenly ask not to attend classes was almost unthinkable, as if she’d fallen in with the wrong crowd or lost her moral compass.
“Emily, I know you’re a brilliant student—one of the best—but you can’t let that go to your head. You can’t afford to be arrogant or overreach yourself. Success is built step by step, and a solid foundation is essential. You still have room to improve—after all, you came in second on the mock exams, not first. You should focus on your studies, review your mistakes, and aim to beat him in the college entrance exam.”
Maxwell launched into a long-winded lecture, and the teachers standing beside him nodded so emphatically it was almost comical. Their gazes practically begged to drag her straight to class themselves.
If it had been the old Emily Blair, she might have agreed with every word Maxwell said.
But Emily Blair had been given a second chance at life—one where she remembered everything from before.
In her previous life, she’d missed the college entrance exam because she was pregnant with Andrew Lane’s child. She’d never gotten another chance to take it.
For her, that missed exam had become an obsession—her own personal demon.
A few months after missing the exam, she gave birth to Eliana Blair, her daughter with Andrew.
