Elizabeth Wilson belatedly noticed the looks people were giving her and shot a glare at Xavier Gonzalez.
This was all his fault!
Unfortunately for her, Xavier kept his head down, completely oblivious to her scathing gaze.
Emily Blair, meanwhile, was just as curious about the truth of Xavier’s relationship with Isabella Austin. Whether Xavier could be trusted depended on it.
Back in her previous life, it hadn’t exactly been a secret that Xavier liked Isabella—most people around him knew, and so did Elizabeth. But what Emily had never figured out was whether, in that past life, Xavier had a hand in the hostile takeover of Elizabeth’s tech company by Andrew Lane. Did Xavier, because of his feelings for Isabella, end up siding with Andrew and help him snatch away everything Elizabeth had worked so hard to build?
It was a question that had always haunted her.
Emily quietly studied Xavier’s bowed head. “So you know Isabella through me,” she said, “and you came to ask me about her because of what you saw online?”
Xavier finally looked up, meeting her eyes, and nodded earnestly. “Yes. She told me she’s been struggling with depression.”
Elizabeth frowned. “And what’s her depression got to do with you? Why are you meddling in her business?”
Flustered, Xavier opened his mouth, then shut it again, fidgeting with the sleeve of his shirt, the very picture of someone desperate to speak but unable to find the words.
Elizabeth just stared at him in exasperation.
Emily broke the silence. “I don’t really know the details. If you want answers, maybe you should ask her yourself.”
She watched Xavier’s expression carefully, not missing the brief flicker of disappointment and sadness that crossed his face.
He shook his head and mumbled, “I don’t have her number.”
