Xavier Gonzalez’s eyes darted with panic as he shook his head hard. “No, no, that’s not it—you’ve got it all wrong. I didn’t—”
“Oh, don’t give me that!” Elizabeth Wilson jabbed her finger right into his cheek, pressing down for emphasis. “If you didn’t, then why are you blushing? If you’re innocent, why are you so worried about whether Isabella Austin’s depressed or not?”
Elizabeth felt a sting of betrayal. She glared at Xavier. “Don’t tell me you actually like her. Do you have any idea what Isabella Austin’s done? If you don’t, I can fill you in. Someone like her—she’s just—”
Xavier’s cheeks burned even redder. He waved his hands frantically, urging Elizabeth to lower her voice. “No, please, just stop. That’s not it, really—”
But Elizabeth wouldn’t let up, her eyes boring into him. Desperate, Xavier turned to Emily Blair for help.
Emily just smiled. “Honestly, I’m curious too. What’s really going on between you and Isabella Austin?”
Xavier glanced at both of them, defeated. He finally dropped his head, shoulders slumping as he bent forward.
“It’s not like that. Not the way you’re thinking,” he mumbled, voice muffled. “I don’t have feelings for her.”
Emily raised an eyebrow.
Xavier looked up, meeting their eyes earnestly. “Really. She helped me out once, a while back. I’ve always remembered it and wanted to repay her somehow. That’s all it is. I’m not good enough for her anyway.”
Emily said nothing.
Elizabeth eyed him skeptically. “If that’s true, then why are you blushing?”
Xavier answered seriously, “I just hate being teased about this stuff. It’s embarrassing, and I always blush when I’m embarrassed. Remember when you told me to leave in front of everyone? I turned completely red then, too. You didn’t notice.”
At the mention of kicking him out, Elizabeth’s bravado wavered a little. She cleared her throat. “Well, you kept following me around. I told you to leave but you wouldn’t, so I had no choice. It’s your fault, really.”
Xavier murmured, “But you—back then—”
