Frustrated that he couldn’t strip her as quickly as he wanted, Evan suddenly shoved himself up, glaring down at her with a venomous scowl. Without warning, he slapped her hard across the face, his eyes dark with malice.

“Playing innocent, are you?” he spat. “Cut the act, you little tease.”

A cruel grin twisted his lips. “Game’s over. I’m done playing along with your little charade.”

The blow had been brutal—Emily’s head spun, her ears rang, and she could taste blood welling in her mouth. She bit down, nearly breaking the skin of her own lip, her face drained of all color. “Please…” she whispered, barely able to form the words.

Suddenly, the shrill ring of a phone cut through the tension. In that moment, it sounded to Emily like the last lifeline she might ever have.

“Your phone’s ringing,” she said, clutching at hope. “Someone’s calling you.”

Evan shot a glance toward the phone, his eyes narrowing in irritation. But he ignored the call, turning his attention back to her with a twisted, predatory look.

“Forget the phone, Emily. This is our time.”

He reached for her again, rough hands fumbling at her clothes. Emily curled into herself, clinging desperately to what little dignity she had left, tears of humiliation slipping down her cheeks. “Don’t touch me. Please, I can find someone else—”
