Her sidekick grabbed her wrist, his face a mix of shock and anger. “You’re going to get yourself killed walking in there alone!”
Emily Blair’s expression hardened. “I know what I’m doing. Stay out of it.”
She was so stubborn, so unyielding, that for a moment, the tall young man—well over six feet—was caught off guard. He just stared at this slender girl, momentarily at a loss for words.
Without another word, Emily turned on her heel and walked away.
In her previous life, Emily hadn’t paid much attention to the Lane Family’s distant relatives, nor did she know much about the nearby nightclubs. She only vaguely remembered that the club’s owner was connected to Andrew Lane somehow, which explained why he strutted about, acting above the law and bullying people whenever he pleased.
Her memories were hazy, but she seemed to recall that this club had gotten bigger over time, eventually opening several more locations.
All that suggested the owner must have close ties to the Lane Family—and that meant tonight was only going to get harder.
The club wasn’t far from her apartment, maybe a few hundred yards. Its name was just a jumble of letters—she hadn’t bothered to read it carefully. The place was blindingly bright, the neon lights making her eyes ache, while the music inside pounded so loudly it rattled her bones.
She was still wearing her blue-and-white school uniform, looking completely out of place as she stood in front of the club’s entrance.
Emily hesitated for a moment, but in the end, she went in—school uniform and all.
Predictably, she was stopped right away by a bouncer at the door. His tone was rough, and his eyes roamed over her face and body with open scrutiny. “Hey, you know what kind of place this is?”
Clutching her shirt, Emily put on an expression that wavered between innocent and flirtatious as she slowly stepped closer, blinking up at him.
“A friend told me there are a lot of rich people here. I thought maybe I could earn some money.”
The bouncer eyed her under the harsh neon glow, and his look gradually changed.
She was slim and willowy, her figure balanced and striking even in the shapeless uniform. The outfit couldn’t hide the gentle curves of her body. He glanced down—the uniform pants were a little short, probably from a few years of growing, and they left the delicate skin of her ankles exposed beneath the hem.
