“Maureen, has Geoff ever told you he loves you? He said that a lot to me back then…”

Listening to her, Maureen silently recalled those days she had spent with Geoffrey.

He’d never stepped into the kitchen.

When she fell sick, he’d never asked her how she felt.

As for love? Of course, he’d never said that word to her.

At night, she lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.

She’d loved Geoffrey for twelve years, always chasing after him. Only now did she learn that he had once loved someone else with the passion of a teenage boy.

All of a sudden, she realized it was time for her to give up.

She didn’t sleep a wink that night.

The next morning, Geoffrey came back. The way he looked at her was extremely cold.

“Just how much are you after my family’s money? You’d do anything just to keep me–your personal money–making machine–around, wouldn’t you?”

Puzzled, she didn’t know what he was talking about. She instinctively explained, “I never want your money.”

All she ever wanted was to be with him.

Hearing her reply, he smiled mockingly, “Noelle went to the office this morning, begging me to have a child with you. What was that about?”

She was dumbfounded.

Seeing the coldness in his eyes, she knew that last night wasn’t the problem.

He delivered a cold ultimatum before leaving.

“Maureen, if you still want to be my wife and keep your family from being wrecked, keep Noelle in check.”

Before Maureen could figure out what to do, Noelle came to her first.

Unlike her usual indifference, Noelle took Maureen’s hand and said with a gentle smile, “Reenie, why don’t you go and plead with Geoff to give you a child? Even medical intervention is acceptable.”

Medical intervention?

Maureen stared at her blankly.

She continued, “Andrea’s told me he’s never slept with you over the past three years.”

It wasn’t until this moment that Maureen finally knew what the so–called “last straw” was.

She didn’t get it. Why did Geoffrey tell Andrea about this?

Maybe he really loved her so much.

All of a sudden, she felt relieved.

“Mom, let go.”

Stunned, Noelle frowned. “What?”

“I’m tired. I want a divorce…”

A loud smack rang out.

Noelle slapped her across the face hard before she could continue.

The kindness on Noelle’s face was replaced by ruthlessness as she pointed at Maureen’s nose, snapping, “A divorce? You don’t even get to say that word! Without the Sutton family, you’re nothing! You’ll be a divorced woman, dam- aged goods. Who’d ever want you?”

It hurt so much that Maureen felt numb.

Noelle had never liked her since she was little.

Noelle was a famous dancer.

Having a daughter born with impaired hearing was something she was ashamed of.

As a result, she had hired a nanny to care for Maureen and only allowed her to return home when she reached school

age.
