Chapter106.

The afternoon rain fell softly around me, but it did nothing to wash away the bleakness churning inside.

Leland’s betrayal felt like a wound, deep and agonizing.

“Baby, you are all I have left, I thought to myself.

Suddenly, a van shot towards me. Was this another scheme Caitlyn had orchestrated?

It seemed she couldn’t bear to see me alive even for a moment longer.

I tried to bolt towards a nearby flower bed, but men materialized out of the gloom, moving with chilling precision.

In a few swift strides, they cut off my escape, blocking every path. I froze, stunned into immobility.

I lashed out, but my punches were as ineffective as swatting at flies against a stone wall. Frustrated, I kicked back.

It was like kicking a solid block of ice; the impact jarred me, sending searing pain through my leg, forcing me to crumple to the ground. Seizing the opportunity, two of them grabbed me, hauling me roughly into the van.

Leland… Leland! Do you really want me dead? What have I done wrong?”

Before I could plead further, a cloth, thick with a pungent chemical smell, was forced over my mouth and nose. The world tilted, darkness swallowed me, and consciousness faded into oblivion.

Meanwhile, far from where I lay unconscious, Leland burst out of the nightclub, a frantic energy driving him.

“What were you thinking, Caitlyn? I just wanted her to see how people really are! I never told you to leave her alone with those drunks! Now she’s disappeared! Explain this to me, Caitlyn! I asked you to play along, not to put her in mortal danger!”

Caitlyn visibly trembled.”No, Leland! It got out of hand, that’s all! I… I just love you so much. I saw you looking dizzy and fainted-I was going to get you to the hospital! Oh, Denise said Kaylie wasn’t feeling well either, maybe she went to the hospital too. Perhaps we should check there?”

Leland ran a hand over his face, doubt warring with his anxiety. He climbed into the waiting car, his mind racing, and they sped off towards the hospital. Caitlyn watched him go, a triumphant smile playing on her lips.

She pulled out her phone and sent a message to the hospital under the Leslie Group, “Dr. Sheppard, the water Leland drank is laced. Proceed as planned.*

The reply came almost instantly, “Understood, Ms. Hoffman. Consider it handled.”
