Chapter107.
I found myself bound, on a ship tossing gently on the waves, water dripping from my hair as Caitlyn stood over me, flanked by several men. She crossed her arms, a triumphant smirk playing on her lips.
1 let out a short, bitter laugh, Caitlyn, is this the best you can do? Another kidnapping? Really?”
My scorn fueled her fury. She backhanded me across the face. Tied hand and foot, I struggled weakly to sit up, but the bindings held fast, rendering me helpless.
Caitlyn looked down her nose at me.”Kaylie, any thoughts of escape are pointless now. We’re out at sea. Your fate is sealed. You and that unborn child of yours will be shark bait. I will become Leland’s rightful wife soon.”
A humorless smile touched my lips.”What if Leland finds out you’re the one who killed me? Do you think that will endear you to him? If all you really want is the money, I’ll sign over everything. I’ll divorce Leland, leave this place, disappear forever.”
Caitlyn waved my words away dismissively. “Leave? And risk Leland finding you again one day? You claimed he feels something even for a stray dog he’s raised. Only your death will make Leland forget you, and ensure my place as his wife is absolute. Today is your last day, Kaylie. I won’t hesitate again.”
My mind raced, desperately searching for any possible way out of this nightmare.
I couldn’t just die, not like this, not at the hands of this mistress. Would that be my legacy, the most tragic, discarded wife in the world?
I drew a ragged breath, forcing myself to think, to find a crack in her cruelty. An idea sparked. “Caitlyn, I spoke with Allen, the president of Zenith Group. He told me personally that he won’t proceed with the contract signing tomorrow morning unless he sees me there. If you want to solidify your position at the Leslie Group and seize this chance, you know what you have to do.”
Caitlyn froze, her triumphant expression faltering, replaced by stunned disbelief, then boiling rage.”You… you conniving woman! I’ll kill you right here
and now!”
I met her glare, my own eyes hardening.”Allen said explicitly he won’t sign with you if I’m not present. Call him now if you don’t believe me!”
Caitlyn’s breath came in angry gasps. She yanked my collar.”Kaylie, you’re nothing but a discarded wife. Leland doesn’t want you anymore! Do you think you still have the right to be arrogant?
