Tyrell’s eyes immediately welled with moisture. “The last time… it was April 20th, at Cherry Farmland. I saw you tending the fruit trees, wearing a white dress that made you look like a fairy among the blossoms. You stayed for three hours, and I watched you for every one of those hours.”

A crushing weight settled on my head, stealing my breath.

Allen stuck out his tongue playfully. Right, I’ll go get breakfast ready. I’ll wait for you in the lobby.”

Tyrell continued, “And before that, it was during Christmas when you and Leland were setting off fireworks outside The Leslie Amusement Park. You did it for three whole hours, and I sat nearby, watching you for just as long. The fireworks were beautiful, but your happy smile was even more beautiful.”

I couldn’t listen anymore; I didn’t want to talk about “happiness.”

Forcing back the tears threatening to spill, I changed the subject briskly, “Tyrell, I’m hungry. Let’s go get something to eat.”

He nodded, looking flustered, and clarified, “Yeah, okay. What I meant was, I come back to San Francisco several times a year, and every time, I do see

you.”

I managed a tight smile, a sharp ache piercing my heart. It felt like getting old, like my heart could no longer bear the weight of such tender words.

My mind raced. What worried me most was how I would ever repay Tyrell if he ended up funding the acquisition of the Leslie Group?

The Leslie Group’s nearly 4 billion dollars in assets had practically evaporated overnight. I had secretly transferred 580 million dollars, intending to use it as a surprise weapon against Leland via the Zenith Group, which now backed me.

When I’d exposed their affair online, I’d already sold my shares for 400 million dollars. Leland didn’t know the shares I’d purchased under a fake name

had been sold.

Just then, as we walked towards the lobby, Tyrell seemed to sense my worry and spoke quietly to me.

This hotel belongs to a friend’s family. You can be sure Leland and Caitlyn won’t just show up uninvited. My friend has agreed to keep the place clear for us for the next few days.

“And please, don’t worry about the partnership details. Every cent I’m investing in acquiring the Leslie Group is simply repayment for saving my life. It’s the least I can do.”
