Chapter 43
The next morning, Leland had set the breakfast table. I didn’t know when he came back last night, but the breakfast was warm.
He sat at the table, with sunlight shining on him, making him look golden.
He looked impressive, but this special man wouldn’t be mine anymore.
He signaled for me to come over to him. Then, he touched my hair, which annoyed me for some reason.
He smiled slightly and apologized, “It was stormy last night, but you were brave. When I got home, you were asleep. My little princess, you’re really grown up.”
I had gone to sleep at 1 AM. I ate my food quietly, not saying anything.
He watched me with a comforting smile, then tried to make me laugh with jokes, but they weren’t funny.
“Is something bothering you? Are you upset? Remember, I’m getting old. When I’m old, I’ll need you to look after me.”
I looked at him calmly, with a sad smile.”You’ve taken care of me for fifteen years, Leland. Will you let me take care of you for fifteen years?”
Leland was surprised. “What are you saying? You’re not planning to leave me, are you?”
Realizing he had misunderstood my words, I frowned and clarified, “No, I’m just feeling emotional. I’m worried that I might die before you do.”
“Not gonna happen.” He put his hand over my mouth, his eyes showing disapproval, just like when I was a kid and did something wrong.
*I feel old now. Recently, I had my car keys in my hand, ready to go. I turned around and couldn’t find them. I searched the whole villa, only to realize they were in my hand the whole time. Don’t you think I’m getting old?”
I gave a weak smile and took a few sips of coffee.”I’m done eating. By the way, I have a business trip for almost a week to meet a client. Do you want to drive me?”
Leland looked reluctant to let me go.”Can’t you skip it? Can’t Denise handle it? I don’t want to be away from you, and I’m worried since you’ve never left me before.”
