Chapter 67
Lying on the ground, despite Denise’s efforts to help me stand, I was unable to rise. I even sensed that death was nearing; I truly lacked the strength to continue holding on.
I wanted to tell Denise that I didn’t wish to die, but I was weak and had no strength left to utter a single word.
As my awareness dimmed, I felt a force gradually lifting me until I passed out.
Upon regaining consciousness, the scent of disinfectant greeted me. I didn’t want to open my eyes, and I was trembling.
I heard Denise’s anxious voice coming through, “Kay, you’ve lost a lot of blood, but the doctor said the baby is safe. As long as you don’t overexert yourself, the baby will be fine. Do you hear me?”
I abruptly opened my eyes and, with skepticism, touched my still-flat abdomen.
I looked at Denise doubtfully. “I’m really pregnant? There was so much blood, and my stomach hurt intensely. Denise, is that really true?”
Denise nodded. “It’s true, Kay. Dr. Olsen personally operated on you and saved your baby. She addressed the bleeding in your uterus, so the baby was
fine.”
“Really?” I repeatedly sought confirmation. At that moment, Carlie entered the room, her expression slightly serious as she came closer.
“Kay, it’s true. The baby is safe. I was terrified when I heard you fainted. Since your parents passed, Leland has always taken care of you. You must have been terrified by this kidnapping. Those despicable kidnappers were so cruel. Thank goodness you’re okay.”
Hearing Carlie express concern for I could no longer hold back my tears. My heart ached faintly, and I involuntarily began to cry.
