226 You’re the one who insisted on arranging the childhood engagement.
Scarlett Adler wasn’t the type to be overly traditional. Since Grandpa Hector wanted to host a proper
gathering, she didn’t see any reason to stop him.
Besides, Scarlett had never skimped on her three kids. She didn’t believe in raising sons strictly and
daughters lavishly. In her view, if she could give them the best, she would. Education wasn’t a one–size–fits–all
matter.
The meal was a joyful affair.
Even though William Adler wasn’t too fond of Hugo Hodges, the warm atmosphere softened him up quite a
bit.
After the meal, Scarlett and William stayed for a while longer, chatting with Grandpa Hector until late before
deciding to head home.
Despite Grandpa Hector’s reluctance to see them go, he understood Scarlett’s nature well enough not to
insist they stay. Some things just take time, and he knew better than to rush it.
Scarlett was principled and strong–willed, not someone who could be easily swayed.
Since William had driven them there, Hugo didn’t even get the chance to offer to see them off.
So, William drove Scarlett and the kids back home.
As soon as everyone left, the Hodges family home felt significantly emptier.
With the guests gone, Mr. Hodges turned to glare angrily at Hugo Hodges. “It’s all your fault. At my age, I shouldn’t have to endure the pain of missing loved ones,” he grumbled, storming off to the living room where
he sat on the couch, his mood souring.

Hugo followed him back, casually lounging on the sofa with his legs crossed. He was in a rare good mood
and looked at Mr. Hodges with a smile. “Yes, it’s all my fault. But trust me, it won’t be long before you won’t
have to miss them anymore, watching them leave with longing eyes.”
Hearing this, Mr. Hodges perked up, turning to look at Hugo with narrowed eyes. “Things are going well with
Scarlett, aren’t they?”
“Can’t you tell?” Hugo replied with a smirk, his mind filled with images of his day with Scarlett Adler. While he
couldn’t be sure of Scarlett’s feelings for him, he was confident that she was gradually warming up to him.
Just having this opportunity was enough for him.
Mr. Hodges observed Hugo’s lovestruck expression and almost scoffed, but then he recalled how the two of
them had returned together earlier, looking every bit like a perfect couple. He could already imagine the
future visits when the young couple would come to see him, and just the thought lifted his spirits immensely.
However, he was careful not to…
Hugo Hodges felt like he was floating, but Grandpa Hodges quickly wiped the smile off his face and warned
him, “Let me tell you, don’t be fooled by Scarlett’s calm and seemingly indifferent demeanor. She’s actually a
person with strong principles and ideas. The only reason you have a chance now is because of the kids. If
you don’t cherish it, you’ll regret it!”
Listening to Grandpa Hodges, Hugo frowned, “Grandpa, is that really how you see your grandson?”
“Isn’t it? You’ve done your fair share of reckless things,” Grandpa Hodges replied bluntly.
Hugo rarely argued back, “The reason I acted that way back then was because I was unhappy with how you
arranged my marriage. It’s the modern age, yet you still tried to force two people who don’t love each other
together. It’s unfair, and frankly, you share some of the blame for that… But things are different now. If I,
Hugo Hodges, truly love a woman, I’ll be devoted to her for life!”

Hearing his words, Grandpa Hodges let out a cold chuckle and couldn’t help but retort, “You think anyone
wanted to arrange a marriage for you? It was you who insisted on marrying Scarlett when you were little,
begging me to set up a childhood engagement…”
At that moment, Hugo’s eyes narrowed sharply, and he looked at Grandpa Hodges, “What did you say?”
Old Mr. Hodges paused for a moment, realizing he had said too much, and turned his gaze away. “No, I didn’t
say anything…”
But Hugo Hodges had heard him clearly, and he looked at his grandfather with suspicion. The way the old
man averted his eyes only confirmed Hugo’s suspicions. “Grandpa, did you just say that when I was little, I
begged you to arrange a marriage with Scarlett Adler? Did I know her as a child?”
“So what if you knew her? Is that strange? I’ve known Old Adler for over fifty years. It’s not surprising that you
knew her too!” Mr. Hodges replied, then added, “Alright, it’s getting late. You should get some rest.” With that,
he stood up, ready to head to his room.
“Grandpa,” Hugo called out, stopping him. “It’s not strange that I knew her, but your tone… it seems like
there’s something you’re not telling me!” Hugo stated confidently.
“What could I possibly be hiding from you? There’s nothing!”
“If you won’t tell me, I’ll investigate myself. I’m sure I can find out something!” Hugo declared, confident in his
ability to uncover the truth.
At this, Mr. Hodges turned back to him. “It’s all old history. What’s there to investigate? Everything’s fine now!”
“If it’s just old history, why are you so reluctant to talk about it?” Hugo asked.
Old Mr. Hodges looked at his grandson, his brows furrowed. Hugo Hodges was great in every way, except for
his relentless curiosity. He had to get to the bottom of everything and wouldn’t stop until he did.

Seeing that his grandfather wasn’t ready to give in, Hugo lazily raised an eyebrow. “Perhaps Grandpa Adler
knows about this?”
At that moment, Old Mr. Hodges‘ expression changed. He turned to Hugo and growled in a low voice, “You
mustn’t ask Old Adler about this!”
Noticing his grandfather’s anxious demeanor, Hugo’s curiosity only grew. “Then you tell me!”
Old Mr. Hodges looked at him and sighed helplessly. He sat down and slowly said, “This is a lifelong wound
for Old Adler and Scarlett. If you ask about it, it’s like rubbing salt in their wounds.”
Hugo narrowed his eyes. “What exactly happened?”
“This matter goes back twenty years. I had just retired and had nothing to do, so I took you to play chess
with Old Adler. That’s when you met Scarlett. Her parents weren’t around much when she was young, so she
was shy and quiet. Oddly enough, you, who usually ignored others, were different with Scarlett…”
It was different. The moment you saw her, you started talking to her, sticking to her, playing with her, and
even told me you wanted to marry her when you grew up. You begged me to find a way, so I discussed it with
Old Adler, and that’s how your engagement was arranged when you were kids…”
Listening to Mr. Hodges, Hugo furrowed his brow. “Why don’t I remember any of this?”
Mr. Hodges gave him a resigned look and continued, “That’s because you lost your memory!”
“Lost my memory?” Hugo’s frown deepened. “What on earth happened?”
