If only she knew of the hidden threat, Jessica Mendez, Lucian’s longtime secretary, she might’ve come clean that evening.

Later that evening, Lucian arrived home, worn out from the day.

You can retire for the night, Ace.”Lucian said tiredly.

Alright, Boss. Goodnight.” Ace said before disappearing into the shadows.

The house was quiet. Too quiet. Yes, it was late, but usually, there’d be at least a few household staff still moving around.

Lucian heard a faint noise coming from the direction of the dining area and walked toward it.

Alina was standing in the dim room, illuminated only by the warm glow of candles lining the table.

She wore a red silk spaghettistrapped dress with a plunging neckline and interlocking strings at the back, slit high up to her hips. Her hair was curled and pulled into a messy, elegant bun. Her makeup was soft, graceful. On her feet, she wore strappy silver heels that wrapped up to her shins.

Hi.She said softly, her voice almost nervous.

Lucian held himself together before his jaw could hit the floor. She was… stunning.

His mouth wateredbut whether it was from the food or her, he couldn’t tell.

Come, sit,” Alina said gently as she walked over to him. She took his hand in hers and led him to the chair, pulling it out and lowering him into it with her hands resting lightly on his shoulders.

She then took off his suit jacket and draped it over the spare chair beside him.

What would you like to eat?she asked, gesturing toward the variety of delicacies on the table.

You. He almost said but held himself back.

AnythingLucian finally spoke for the first time, his gaze fixed on her. The exhaustion from the day seemed to have been long forgotten.

All he wanted was to pull her into his arms, hold her tight and inhale her intoxicating scent.

He missed her badly.

Alina could feel his eyes on her, and she silently made a note to send Talia a very generous gift for the dress.

I told them to retire early. After placing his plate in front of him and pouring him a glass of champagne, she walked to her seat at the other end of the table.

There was a pause of silence. Lucian stared at her, unmoving.

Under the table, Alina fiddled nervously with her fingers.

Now, not that this isn’t nice or anythingbut what’s all this for?He asked, gesturing around.

Alina inhaled deeply.

This is me showing you how terribly sorry I am,she began, her voice trembling slightly. Lucian, I fucked up. I lied to you, and I know it hurt you. I saw the way you looked at me that dayand I honestly never want to see you look at me like that again.”

She paused, collecting her thoughts.

I was wrong to keep something like that from you, especially when it concerns your family. I should’ve trusted you. And I didn’t. And for that, I’m truly sorry. I promise, if you forgive menothing like this will ever happen again.”

Her hands tightened around her napkin.

I miss you, Lucian. I hate that we’ve been living in the same house but barely speaking. I hate that I hardly get to see you. I hate that I can’t hug you, or kiss you, or-

She’d been staring at her plate, unable to meet his gaze, voice thick with emotion.

She didn’t notice the way Lucian’s expression softened.

Not until she felt his fingers wrap around hers, warm, firm, grounding.

Lucian-She started, startled.

But he didn’t let her finish.

In one fluid motion, he pulled her to her feet and crashed his mouth onto hers.

It wasn’t gentle. It wasn’t hesitant.

It was desperate. Fierce,

His hand slid to the small of her back, pressing her flush against him, as if trying to erase the space they’d allowed to come between them. Her breath caught. Her lips parted instinctively under the weight of his kiss.

Alina’s heart pounded. Her hands reached up, one clutching the front of his shirt, the other curling around

his neck.

She could taste it, his frustration, his longing, and something deeper that hadn’t faded.

Lucian kissed her like a man starved, like he’d been holding back everythingand now, finally, he could breathe again.

And Alina melted into him, holding on like she never wanted to let go.

For a moment, everything finally made sense again.

When they pulled back, both were breathless, their foreheads pressed together.
