Things couldn’t get any better for Alina. She was in a good place with Lucian, her business was thriving, there was no drama from the man in the shadows, no Adrian, and even Seraphina had been silent.

Last Alina heard, her parents had sent her out of the country on a vacation, but in reality, it was to keep her from messing with Alina.

Whatever the reason, Alina was glad she was away.

But fate has a dark sense of humor. Whenever things were going great in Alina’s life, Fate always found a way to fuck it up.

“The last batch of the summer collection is being packaged and would be ready for delivery at your word.” Alina told Louis with a smile.

They were currently in her office, and she had finally finished the huge client order Louis had brought to her.

“I knew you were the best person for the job.” Louis said, visibly impressed.

“I mean, you are lucky you chose me, because who else can deliver such top–notch service?” Alina responded smugly, brushing imaginary dust from her shoulders.

“Wow, how modest.” Louis rolled his eyes.

“But for real, thank you for trusting me with something this big.” Alina’s tone grew a little more serious now.

“It’s nothing, Alina.” Louis waved her off.

“No, you don’t understand. I was being impossible at the start, but you were able to be professional about everything and make me see reasons why you were an asset to the company. Working with you has not only made my account fat…” She let out an exaggerated sigh, making Louis chuckle. “But you have put my company on an international level. So thank you.”

“It was great working with you too, Alina. Working with you was like a walk in the park. You knew exactly what the client wanted, and you didn’t stress me either. And let’s not forget that I also get a commission, so it’s a win–win.” He told her with a warm smile.

“True, but still. I appreciate it.” She smiled back.

During their whole time working together, Louis had been very professional. He never once made an advance toward her or did anything to make her feel uncomfortable,

In fact, he always referred to her as Miss Dawn. He still smiled a lot and joked around, but his jokes never crossed the line.

“So, you have two weeks left before your contract expires-”

“I still can’t convince you to sign another with me?” Louis cut her off with his usual smile, though this time it was a little strained.

He still had a mission to accomplish. He hadn’t been able to get Alina to fall in love with him yet. Working with her was the only way he could be near her without it looking suspicious. Now, all he had was two weeks. He either made her fall for him, or found a way to extend his contract with her.

“I’m sorry, Louis, but you know I can’t.” Alina shot him an apologetic smile.

“But we work so well together.” Louis tried to convince her.

“I know, I know, but I really cannot.”

No matter how much Alina would have loved to work with Louis again, she couldn’t risk it. Working with him was already a close call, and it was a miracle Lucian hadn’t found out.

Lucian didn’t like Louis for some reason, and Alina respected that. If the reverse were the case, she would expect him to do the same.

“That’s too bad then. We make a great team.” Louis said, his voice sounding a little defeated.

But he wasn’t going to give up. He was going to find another way. He had to get Alina to his boss untouched, and for that to happen, she would have to go with him willingly. That would require her trust.

“How about you cash in that lunch favor of yours?” Alina said in a light tone, trying to change the topic.

“Oh, that.” Louis said flatly.

“Come on, don’t tell me you forgot. I mean, I have to make it up to you for saving me the other day.” Alina reminded him.

“Alright, fine. Since there isn’t much to do here anyway, let’s do it.” Louis agreed.

This could be a good start for him.

“Great, let me just inform Mia to handle things here.” Alina said, calling Mia through the intercom. “Mia, I’m stepping out for lunch. Please make sure things are in order until I return.”

“Don’t worry, ma’am. I have everything covered.” Mia said.

Alina didn’t even need to ask, Mia always had things handled whenever she wasn’t around.

“You can call me if there’s anything that needs my attention.” Alina added.

“Will do, ma’am.”

“Alright then, shall we?” Alina said to Louis after dropping the intercom,

As she was picking up her things, her phone rang.

A wide smile spread across her face when she saw who the caller was.

Alina lifted a finger silently, asking Louis to give her a minute. He nodded and sat back down.

“Hey, baby.” Alina said with a bright smile.

“Well, someone sounds happy to hear from me.” Lucian teased.

“I am,” she replied frankly. “How’s work going?”

“Going great, Doll. Miss you.”

“I miss you too, baby.” Alina responded softly.

Louis clenched his fist. It made him sick to his stomach to see how lovey–dovey Alina and Lucian were with each other. How was he supposed to win her over if she had heart eyes just from talking to him?

“Have you had lunch yet?” Lucian asked her.

“Not yet. About t—”

“Perfect. Cancel whatever plan you have, and I’ll come pick you up so we can have lunch together.” Lucian said.

“Uhm…” Alina’s eyes flickered toward Louis.

As much as she would have loved to have lunch with Lucian, she couldn’t just cancel on Louis, especially when she was the one who suggested their lunch in the first place.

“What’s wrong?” Lucian asked, hearing the reluctance in her tone.

“I already have plans that cannot be canceled, baby.” Alina told him gently.

Hearing this, Louis got up, already knowing where this was heading. He pointed toward the door, but Alina grabbed his hand before he could move, shaking her head at him.

“Is it a work thing?” Lucian asked.

“Yeah… something like that.” She responded.

It wasn’t a total lie. Louis was her work partner, and it was just lunch. Nothing more.

“Alright, Doll. Maybe next time.” Lucian said, sounding a bit disappointed.

“I’m sorry, baby-”

“No, it’s alright. It’s work,” he cut her off. “I’ll see you at home then.”

“I’ll make it up to you.” She promised.

“You better.” His voice dropped, growing darker.

Alina knew exactly what he meant by that.

“You should really have a little faith in me,” she said, finally letting go of his hand. “Let’s go.”
