Alina sank onto the park bench, phone pressed to her ear, the afternoon light slanting across her face. She ran a hand through her hair, her heart still heavy with the weight of the earlier disappointment.
“I had a feeling she was but I was hoping I was overthinking it,” she admitted, voice low. “Only a woman who sees someone as a real threat would behave like that.”
On the other end, Talia let out a sympathetic sigh. “Did Lucian at least reply to your text? Or pick up your call?”
Alina’s shoulders slumped. “Nothing. And that worries me, usually he would at least send a thumbs–up emoji to acknowledge my messages. He never leaves me on read, never.”
“That’s… unusual,” Talia murmured. “He must be really swamped with work then. Try not to worry, okay?”
Alina closed her eyes for a moment. She knew Talia was trying to comfort her, but Talia didn’t know Lucian like she did, he always responds to her messages no matter how busy he gets, Always.
The thought of Lucian so busy he couldn’t spare two seconds for her message felt like a knife twist.
She wondered if this was what it had gotten to now. Had they fallen apart to the extent that he didn’t care about her anymore?
“Okay.” She said, voice flat.
Silence stretched, then Talia’s tone brightened a fraction. “What are you going to do about Jessica?”
“What about her?” Alina asked, confused.
“Yeah, I mean how are you going to deal with her?” Talia clarified.
Alina pressed her lips together. “Honestly? Nothing yet. Not until Lucian and I are… better. Besides, Jessica’s only been outright rude, no real sabotage. I can’t exactly retaliate over a few barbs.”
Talia clicked her tongue. “So you are just going to let her walk all over you?”
“That’s not what I am saying Tally.” Alina ran a frustrated hand over her face,
“Then what are you saying? Because it seems to me that you are going to let her get away with the disrespect. What happened to the Alina that beat Trixy up because she said some provocative words to her huh?”
Alina wanted to put Jessica in her place, badly. But at the moment, Jessica was the least of her worries.
“Talia, she hasn’t exactly insulted me or physically hurt me, all she did was throw a few rude remarks. I can’t beat her up for that. ” Alina countered. “Plus, I need to earn Lucian’s trust back first. After that, I’ll decide how

to handle Jessica.
:.
“But this has nothing to do with your current situation with him.” She countered back.
“Oh but it does, she is his secretary and I cannot risk him not taking my side if I was to do anything to her, it would break me Talia if he were to take her side instead of mine. So for now, I am just going to ignore her.” Alina explained her worries.
“Oh, now I get it.” Talia said in understanding. “I could run a background check,” Talia offered. “See if there’s any… dirt on her.”
Alina laughed softly, the sound brittle. “Jessica Mendez looks too perfect for her own good, I doubt she would have anything incriminating on her. But hey, knock yourself out.”
“Nobody is that perfect Ally, and I am going to find out what skeleton she has in her closet.” Talia told her.
Talia didn’t believe that anybody was a saint, especially not in a City like Elaris. The city has a way of corrupting even the most innocent of minds.
“All right hacker zero, do your thing.” Alina chuckled, the sound actually genuine.
Talia paused. “Just promise me you’ll keep pressing Lucian. try to figure out why he’s ghosting you. I know him, he wouldn’t ignore you for long, he couldn’t in the past when you were the most horrible human being to him-.”
“Hey!?” Alina protested, glaring at the space in front of her but Talia ignored her.
“– So I am sure he wouldn’t start now, something has to be up.” Talia finished.
Alina nodded, even though Talia couldn’t see her. “I will, I vowed to make this work, I am not going to let this deter me.”
“That’s the spirit.” Talia smiled. “Oh by the way, I will be going out of town for work.” Talia informed her.
“Oh, for how long? Alina asked, sounding disappointed.
She needed Talia here. Especially with the current situation of her relationship. Talia was the anchor that always kept her grounded, she didn’t know how she was going to cope without her.
“Don’t sound so sad baby, I will only be gone for a week, two weeks max.” Talia assured her.
“That’s so long, but I need you here.” Alina whined.
“I know and I am sorry. If I could, I wouldn’t go but this is important, but I will make sure I am always accessible on the phone so you have nothing to worry about.”
“It’s not the same.” Alina said softly.
“I know baby but time will fly so fast you won’t even realize that I am gone.” Talia said in a comforting tone.
They lingered on the phone for a few more minutes, Talia offering comic relief, reminding Alina of happier

Alina tucked her phone into her pocket and looked up at the sky, gathering her courage she got up from the parkbench.
Jordan was leaning against the car, hands in his pockets while Lee was on the phone, his expression serious.
“Ready?” She asked, approaching them.
Jordan straightened. “Whenever you are, ma’am.”
Lee put his phone away and nodded in response.
She steeled herself and slid into the back seat. “Take me to Alinova.”
Jordan nodded, and the car rolled away from the quiet park, carrying Alina back toward her workshop, and whatever came next.
