Chapter 216

AUTHOR’S POV

Chairs shifted, glasses lifted towards Damien’s direction, and the clinking of crystal filled the hall. Guests echoed, To Damien Evergreen!before sipping.

Damien inclined his head in acknowledgment, though his expression remained hard to read.

Dinner soon followed, the soft murmur of conversation spreading across tables. While plates were set down and wine refilled, Lucian leaned subtly toward Damien, the two men slipping easily into talk of figures, projections, and next steps.

Alina, however, felt her shoulders sag when she caught sight of familiar red hair at the entrance. Talia, radiant and grinning, had finally arrived.

Relief swept through Alina, I will be right back. She excused herself quickly, rising from the table.

Lucian grabbed her hand, a frown on his face. “Where are you going?

Talia is here.” She said simply nodding towards Talia’s direction.

Lucian’s eyes followed hers to see the red head walking into the venue. Alright be safe.” He said before letting her go.

Alina was going to say You worry too much. But she nodded instead.

She caught up with her friend halfway in. Really, Talia? She whispered sharply, her voice tinged with exasperation. You consider this early?

Talia’s grin only widened. I’ve been ready since forever. I just wasn’t about to put myself through the boring half of the dinner.

So what have you been doing then?Alina asked unimpressed.

Well Ace and I are very creative when it comes to whiling away time.” She said with a wink.

Alina’s face twisted into disgust. Eww, I didn’t need to know that, why would you tell me that?

In my defense you asked.Talia chuckled at her friend’s discomfort.

Alina

gave her a flat stare, sarcasm dripping from her tone. Thanks a lot for letting me go through that alone while you were busy having sex at home.

Oh, don’t be dramatic, and it was in the car.Talia rolled her eyes playfully. Besides….you looked fine.”

Whatever.Alina huffed, waving a hand. I’m hungry, let’s go get something to eat.

She was indeed starving because aside from breakfast, she hadn’t had anything to eat all day.

Talia gasped mockingly. When are you ever not hungry?

Alina’s lips twitched despite herself, and she nudged her friend’s shoulder. Shut up.”

The two of them shared a small laugh as they made their way toward the buffet table, slipping into the comfort of their usual banter amidst the elegance of the evening.

The evening was flowing easily when two women approached Alina and Talia, their eyes sparkling as they held up design samples that had been cut off from a magazine.

Miss Alina, we’d love for you to recreate this piece for us.One of them said eagerly, pressing the paper forward.

Alina smiled politely, tilting her head as she glanced over the design. Hi ladies.” Alina greeted then took a closer look at the design It’s lovely. We can discuss details later, I’ll make sure to-

Before she could finish, a waiter carrying a tray of champagne flutes stumbled, bumping into her shoulder. The cold fizz splashed down the side of her gown.

Oh my goodness! I’m so sorry! The waiter stammered, his face blanching as he bowed repeatedly.

Alina blinked, mildly irritated, but quickly raised her hand to stop him. It’s fine. Don’t worry, accidents happen.

Fine?one of the women snapped sharply, eyes narrowing. How is this fine? Is he blind? She asked Alina, Are you blind? What company employs you? I’ll make sure they fire you for this.” She spat at the waiter.

The second lady curled her lip in disdain. Do you even realize how expensive her dress is? You couldn’t afford it if you worked all your life and got reincarnated twice over!

The waiter’s hand trembled around the tray. His eyes watered, his lips quivering as though he might cry.

Alina sighed softly, feeling a pang of sympathy. That’s enough ladies, she said firmly, her voice steady but kind. You’re scaring him. I have a spare dress in my car.

As if on cue, Lee appeared, carrying a sleek garment bag. Miss Alina.” He said, extending.. toward her.

Talia stepped in quickly, taking the bag with a knowing nod. “Got it.

Alina turned back to the waiter, her expression softening. Are you okay? She asked gently.

Yes, ma’am,he whispered, bowing again. I’m so sorry-

Don’t worry about it,Alina cut in, her tone warm and reassuring. You’re not going to get fired. Take the rest of the night off.”

The young man’s eyes widened, relief flooding his face. Thank youthank you so much.He hurried off, clutching the tray as though it were a lifeline.

Alina then gave the women a polite but cool smile. If you’ll excuse me, I need to change.

Talia raised a brow, smirking at the ladies as she looped her arm through Alina’s. Together, they made their way toward the restroom.

As they crossed the room, Alina caught Lucian’s eyes from across the hall. His gaze was dark with worry, his jaw tight. She offered him a small, reassuring smile, it was those soft and steady kind, letting him know she was fine.
