All right, that’s enough,” Freya cut in, though her tone was gentle. “Longing Bird and I have some important busi- ness to discuss.”
I waved once more at Maggie, and she waved back shyly as Freya and I stepped into the elevator.

Sprawled on Callum’s office lounge chair, I stared blankly out the window. No matter how bright or stunning the view was, it still couldn’t lift my mood.

Since Lilith had subtly turned me down yesterday in the car, my thoughts had spiraled in endless loops.
I even couldn’t help but wonder:
Would she have pulled away like that, grown distant if I hadn’t lied–if I hadn’t said I wasn’t interested in her?
Even now, I still didn’t understand what had caused the shift.
Everything had been fine when we left the community. It was only after we met Brandon that her mood changed.
But… could it really have been because of Brandon?
My brow furrowed.
From the way she looked at him, I could tell she despised him, loathed his very existence.
There was no
way her rejection had anything to do lingering feelings for Brandon.

Maybe it had to do with me asking for a special name to call her by. Maybe she realized I was getting emotionally in- vested.
Possessive, even.
And maybe that scared her.
Either

Chapter 45

Letting out another sigh, I heard the door open and close, followed by familiar footsteps echoing across the room.
I didn’t even need to turn to know it was.
“Why are you here again?” Callum’s voice carried that familiar edge of exasperation. “At this rate, I might have to change my office locks before you start treating this place like your second home.”
He let out a huff. “People are already whispering that with how often you come here, you must be trying to steal con- fidential files.”
His voice drifted in and out of my cars. I wasn’t in the mood for banter. Only one person filled my thoughts–and ev- erything else could wait.
“Tell me, Cal… why do you think she turned me down?”
His expression screamed: Not this again, as he rolled his eyes and slumped into his seat.
“The answer’s obvious: she’s just not that into you.”
I shot him a glare. “I know better than you how she feels.”
He gave me a look. “Then why are you here sulking in my office, dragging down the morale of everyone within a ten- meter radius?”
He clicked his tongue. “You’re not even dating yet, and you already look like a lovesick fool. I don’t even want to imagine what you’ll be like if she does break your heart someday.”
A lovesick fool.
Yeah. That felt about right.
A month ago, I’d never have imagined myself in a situation like this, let alone asking Callum for love advice.
“Okay,” Callum suddenly clapped his hands, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Enough talking about women. Let’s get back to business.”
“Have you decided on the office building for the new branch?”
DEAN
As always, talk of business pulled me back into focus.
“Yes,” I said, straightening in my seat.
Callum raised a skeptical brow. “Really? Where?”
