“You went out of your way to send my girlfriend off,” I said, assuming a more relaxed posture as I stared at the aloof man sitting across me. “So why the silence? Or is this supposed to be a staring contest?”

Julian Caldwell, in all his frosty glory, didn’t even blink.

People say time changes everyone–but apparently, Julian was the exception.

“I plan to open a new branch here,” I said casually. “Haven’t you heard?”

He gave me a look that said he’d heard plenty–and probably verified it as well. Julian was many things, but a fool wasn’t one of them.

He was nothing like the Scotts who only believed what they wanted to.

Something in his tone rubbed me the wrong way, and instinct told me I wouldn’t like where this was going.

“I know you’ve been helping Lilith a great deal,” he went on. “Especially with Brandon. But my question is…”

He leaned forward, fingers interlaced. “Did you do it purely to help her? Or did you have another motive–perhaps using her for revenge against Brandon and the Scotts in general?”

My expression darkened instantly, with my hands subconsciously curling into a fist.

He was really pushing it.

If anyone else had said that to me, I’d have taught them a lesson they wouldn’t forget for an entire lifetime.

But this wasn’t just anyone.

This was Lilith’s brother.

My future brother–in–law.

Someone I couldn’t offend–hell, someone I might even have to appease.

I exhaled slowly, masking my irritation behind a fake smile.

“That’s an interesting take,” I said lightly. “Never thought I’d see the day when I’d be accused of being so useless I’d have to hide behind my woman to deal with people I detest.”

The sarcasm in my tone was deliberate, cutting clean and deep.

Julian didn’t flinch. And so we stared each other down, the tension thick enough to slice through

with a knife.

Eventually, we both looked away–simultaneously.

Call it a draw.

“So you’re saying you truly love her?” he asked next, his eyes deadly serious.

That question stripped away any trace of humor.

I straightened, my tone low but steady.

“Of course,” I said, making no secret of my affection. “From the moment I saw her, I knew. She’s the one. My only one.”

“The person I want to love and protect for the rest of my life.”

After I finished, his gaze held mine again, devoid of hostility this time. Just scrutiny, as if he was testing the weight and sincerity of my words.

I let him look all he wanted. I had nothing to hide.

Outside, I stopped at the secretary’s desk. “Where did the two ladies go?”

“The pantry,” one of them said.

I turned just in time to see Lilith and Marissa step out of the said pantry.

“You’re done with your private discussion?” Lilith asked, her tone deceptively mild–but the emphasis on ‘private‘ didn’t escape me.

Amusement flickered in my chest. Sounds like she’s pretty irritated at being left out.

I could already tell she’d grill me about what exactly we talked about later.

She nodded, then turned to Lilith.

The way Lilith’s lips tightened following her words made me frown slightly, but I stayed quiet.

Now wasn’t the time to ask.

Instead, I reached for her wrist, gave Marissa a courteous nod, and led Lilith out in one smooth
