Chapter 56
He seemed compelely unaffected, but I knew what I’d seen. Still, if he wanted to pretend then as the guilty one, I had no choice but to go along with it.
Afterwards, we left the mansion and headed to Raven Tower.
Two trips in a single day. Yet, before yesterday, I couldn’t have imagined a single reason that’d make me set foot in that building.
Dean took me straight to Callum’s office on the eighth floor. The way he walked in without being stopped by anyone, almost made me mistake him for the actual owner.
“You’re here,” Callum said, surprise flickering in his eyes when he saw me, before his usual composure returned.
He rose to his feet, then gestured to the sofa as he walked over.
“How’s the situation online?” Dean asked the moment we were seated.
“Tricky.” Callum handed him a tablet. “Brandon just posted this.”
Something in his tone made my stomach twist. I leaned in and read the post with Dean.
[Hello, everyone. This is Brandon Scott.]
[I’m one of the protagonists of the currently viral rooftop cafe clip.]
I sneered inwardly.
Protagonist? He really liked to blow his own horn.
More like the villain of the story.
[I’m truly disheartened that things have come to this between me and Lilith, but to avoid misunderstandings, I feel I should explain… ]
“Oh, this is going to be good,” I muttered, my jaw clenching.
[Since I can remember, there was a long–standing marriage agreement between the Scotts and Caldwells… originally meant for my half–brother and Lilith’s sister, Marissa… but after he left, people assumed it would be me and Lilith. And from then on, I became her fiancé—at least in name.]
I almost laughed. In name? How convenient.
Then I looked at Dean. He and Marissa almost got engaged?

How come I never knew that?
He felt my gaze glanced at me, and said: “I’ll explain to you later.”
I nodded and then we continued reading.
[But since neither family made anything clear, I believed the engagement was no longer valid. By some twist of fate, I fell in love with Claire Brooks Lilith’s foster sister and we dated for five years… until two months ago, when my family suddenly insisted the engagement with Lilith was still set in stone. That it was going to be made official.]
I was floored.
After all the years I’d known Brandon, I never imagined he could spin a story so convincingly. He’d somehow man- aged to recast a pair of cheating lovers as tragic soulmates–and himself as the poor man caught in the crossfire.
[At first, I resisted… but as many in high society know, personal happiness and love is often sacrificed for family in- terests. In the end, I accepted my fate and broke up with Claire-]
Oh, really? How tragic. Someone fetch the violins.
[… but at the banquet three nights ago–where the engagement was to be officially announced–someone maliciously exposed pictures of me and Claire, painting us as cheaters. Lilith had likely always thought of me as her fiance, so she believed the lies, and soon after, announced my half–brother as her new fiancé in front of everyone.]
My nails dug into my palms, but I couldn’t feel the pain. I just wished I could teleport to Brandon’s side and tear him apart, bit by bit.
[I know I’m partly responsible for not making things clear to her in the first place and for that, I deeply apologize. I sought to clear her misunderstanding, so I invited her to the rooftop café. But I never expected… this outcome.]
The veins in my neck throbbed and bulged out, from how hard I was trying to suppress myself from lashing out.
From screaming.
[Still, I’d like to make it clear that my relationship with Claire has peacefully ended. She’s but an innocent victim in all this.]
