Chapter 69
He studied me quietly, his gaze intent and searching, as though trying to gauge my sincerity. 1 let him look.
Finally, he nodded. “Then let’s agree on a deadline. I’m afraid if we don’t, you’ll keep me waiting longer than I’d like.”
It sounded fair, so I nodded too.
He held up two fingers. “Two days. I’ll give you two days. That’s enough, right?”
Two days. It wasn’t much, but… I’d manage,
“Fine.” I said softly, “You’ll have my answer in two days.”
I gave our clasped hands a light pat, signaling for him to release me. “I should head home. I need to unpack and figure out what I need to buy for the villa.”
He didn’t let go, “You can do that later. First, stay for lunch.”
When I hesitated, he added with a knowing smirk, “You haven’t gone grocery shopping yet, have you? Your entire place is probably empty. Are you planning to starve?”
Right… I realized belatedly that I wasn’t at Caldwell Mansion anymore, where meals were always decided and prepared for me.
Now, I was on my own; figuring out how to fill my stomach was my responsibility.
“Fine,” I muttered reluctantly,
His almond-shaped eyes curved in satisfaction. “Good. I’ll also tell you where to get everything you’ll need for the villa.”
Then he paused, his voice casual.
“Or better yet-I’ll go with you.”

Chapter 69
“Why are you back again?” I asked as soon as I saw Claire lounging in the living room after stepping into my apartment. “I thought you returned to the Caldwell mansion yesterday.”
A thought crossed my mind, and my brows furrowed. “You failed?”
She turned her head toward me, her expression calm. “Why don’t you guess?”
I caught the fleeting glint of smugness in her eyes and smirked, sinking onto the sofa opposite hers.
“So you succeeded after all. Not surprising-after all, even if the rest of that family abandons you, Aunt Evelyn never will.”
At my words, she no longer concealed her pride and glee,
“That’s right. As long as she remembers my mom, she’ll always have my back no matter what I do.”
The arrogance in her tone made me shake my head inwardly.
Aunt Evelyn’s tolerance might seem endless now, but patience always runs out-especially when there’s no blood tie involved.
But I didn’t bother saying that aloud. Claire wouldn’t listen anyway.
“Since it worked,” I said after a pause, “why are you here? Shouldn’t you be at their house- or back in your apartment by now?”
Her brows knitted slightly after I said that. “Aunt Evelyn offered for me to stay, but I refused.”
I arched my brows. “Why? Don’t tell me you’ve grown too comfortable living here these past few days?”
She rolled her eyes. “As if.”
I secretly breathed in relief at that. If she had said yes, things would’ve gotten tricky, and I couldn’t afford any complications now.
To be honest, after our showdown at the Caldwell mansion, I thought that was it-that she’d cut ties with me for good.
But the very next day, when I walked into my apartment, there she was-lounging on my sofa

as though she owned the place. She’d let herself in.
Then again, this wasn’t unfamiliar territory for her.
This apartment had always been one of our secret rendezvous spots, and she knew it like the back of her hand.
Even the passcode wasn’t a mystery to her.
When I asked why she was here, she claimed the Caldwells had kicked her out and stripped her of everything-her car, her apartment, her credit cards.
All of it.
