Chapter 89
“Or did you really think I wouldn’t have a backup plan?”
I collapsed against the door, forcing the words out through ragged breaths. “What… did… do… to… me?”
He crouched in front of me, smirking.

you…
“Nothing much. Just a little something special in the diffuser. Colorless. Odorless. Slow, but impossible to fight. And now… it’s finally working.”
My body trembled as horror dawned.
He’d drugged me.
Flawlessly. I hadn’t suspected a thing.
“It seems you’re impressed by my surprise,” he mocked.
I shook my head violently.
No. I refused to let history repeat itself.
But in this state, escape was impossible.
Then, I thought of him–Dean.
I’d told him to look for me here if he didn’t hear from me in thirty minutes.
My phone was off now, but surely the time had passed–surely he’d be looking for me already
But I also couldn’t rule out the possibility that he might not have seen my message yet.
I couldn’t pin all my hopes on him
My gaze darted around the gaudy room–rose petals on the bed, candlelit dinner on the side table.
Then I spotted it: a knife glinting under the candlelight.
If I could just reach that…

But before the thought settled, a soft electronic chime broke the silence.
My heart leapt. Someone was at the door
Could it be Dean?
In contrast, Brandon’s expression darkened. He obviously wasn’t expecting anyone.

Scooping me up, he tossed me onto the sofa. I couldn’t even resist–the drug had stolen every ounce of strength.
“You’d better keep quiet,” he warned. “Try anything, and you’ll regret it.”
I glared at him in silence. He only laughed, amused. To him, I was no different from a toothless tiger.
He gave me one last look of warning before striding to the door.
Stopping in front of the digital peephole screen, he asked, his voice clipped, “Who’s there?”
An unfamiliar male voice answered.
“Room service.”
My heart sank, my gaze lowering with disappointment.
It wasn’t Dean
“I didn’t order anything.” Brandon said, wariness edging his tone.
The staff’s voice came again. “This is a special request from Miss Claire. She asked us to send it to your room, saying it’s a very important step for the event you planned.”
Rage simmered beneath my skin
So they were really in on this together.
Claire. Oh, Claire.
I thought I had you wrapped neatly around my fingers, that you wouldn’t do anything too extreme since I still had what you’re after
But I underestimated you after all
I forgot that you’re someone who would do anything to save your own skin.

As I seethed, I noticed something.
Brandon’s suspicion didn’t case at the stall’s explanation.
His wariness, if anything, deepened.
I sneered inwardly. Of course he knew this couldn’t be exposed to the public.
Look at him–acting all cautious, like a rat in the gutter.
“Is that so?” he said at last, his voice turning calm. “Then I’ll give her a call to confirm.”

As I drove out of the underground garage and headed for Cameron Hotel, I dialed Callum’s number.
I needed his help–and fast. Lilith might be in danger, and I had to confirm under whose name Room 503 was booked.
Fortunately, unlike me, Callum kept his phone on vibrate during meetings.
He picked up after a few rings.
“You sure have sharp timing,” he said lightly. “The meeting just ended. I’m sure you’re curious as to how the floor reallocation discussion went—
I cut him off. “Lilith is in danger.”
The silence on the other end lasted a beat too long. Then his voice shifted and became grave. “What happened?”
“She texted me before going to meet Claire Brooks. Said if I couldn’t reach her afterward, I should check on her. Now her phone’s switched off, and I can’t get through.”
