“Relax, she didn’t notice a thing. She’s just sick, that’s all.”
Julian wrapped his arm around Queenie’s waist, his voice oozing confidence and disdain. “The engagement was just a stopgap to keep her in line anyway. Postponing it works in my favor. Once she finishes her current project, she’ll have outlived her usefulness. As for today’s embarrassment, I’ll make sure she pays for it, slowly.”
Just then, his phone rang.
Julian glanced at the caller ID, his expression softening as he answered. “Hey, bro?”
On the other end, Bennett’s tone was cool and detached. “How’s Harvest Group doing lately?”
Julian tightened his hold around Queenie’s waist, a smug smile playing on his lips. “Our creative director, Queenie, just landed a major deal. Once it’s wrapped up, we should see a good profit margin. As for everything else, I’ll have to wait for your guidance when you have time to drop by.”
“How about tomorrow afternoon?”
“Sounds good. I’ll be waiting. I’ll make sure Queenie’s there too.”
As soon as Julian hung up, Queenie’s eyes sparkled with excitement. She clung to his arm. “Your brother’s coming tomorrow?”
Julian playfully tapped the tip of her nose. “Dress up a little. Make a good impression for my brother.”
“But… that project was Gwyneth’s doing. What if she tells your brother the truth in front of everyone?” Queenie’s voice trembled with worry.
“Don’t worry. I’ll talk to her tonight. This’ll look good on your résumé, and it gives her a chance to prove her worth.”
Julian spoke with certainty, a self-satisfied smirk curling his lips.
Bennett sat on the couch, a file in his hand.
“So Gwyneth may just be the executive secretary, but she’s the one actually running everything at Harvest Group?” He flipped through the pages, his long, elegant fingers moving with idle grace.
Hugo nodded, a note of admiration in his voice. “That’s right. And I’ve found out that not only the project Julian just mentioned, but also several of Harvest Group’s biggest deals, were all closed by Ms. Fletcher. Queenie’s just the creative director. She only tags along when Ms. Fletcher negotiates, as part of her training.”
Bennett lounged against the cushions, letting out a dry chuckle. “Looks like my little brother still hasn’t learned a thing.”
Watching Bennett’s expression, Hugo offered cautiously, “You’re visiting these branches to select a top-tier executive assistant. Harvest Group is just a small subsidiary of Boyd Group. Honestly, Julian just wants to show off his girlfriend in front of you. If you ask me, maybe we can just skip it?”
Bennett set the file aside and smoothed his cufflinks with an air of indifference. “No need. I’m curious to see what kind of woman could make Julian so blind, enough to let a diamond gather dust.”
