Gwyneth happened to lift her head just then, and their eyes met.
For a long, suspended moment, they gazed at each other beneath the gentle glow of moonlight. The air around them carried the faint sweetness of candied fruit and the cool freshness of night.
Their eyes lingered, searching and entangling, each reflecting the other’s silhouette as if the world had narrowed to this very instant.
They were close—so close that each could hear the other’s breath.
Without quite realizing it, Bennett leaned down, slowly, deliberately.
Gwyneth’s eyelashes fluttered as she closed her eyes, bracing herself, her heart pounding.
His lips, cool and tentative, pressed against hers with a rare tenderness, as if he was holding something precious and fragile.
Even the night breeze seemed to soften, circling the two of them as they kissed, reluctant to disturb this moment of quiet solace.
————————
The hospital.
A sharp, clinical scent of antiseptic cut through the cold air.
Queenie Shaw’s eyelids fluttered, leaden and heavy, before she finally managed to open them.
Staring up at a bland, colorless ceiling, she felt the hollow ache in her body and a dull throb low in her abdomen—reminders of everything that had happened before she lost consciousness.
Suddenly, she was wide awake. Her hand flew instinctively to her stomach.
It was flat. The subtle fullness that should have been there was gone, replaced by an aching emptiness.
Panic seized her in an instant.
“Doctor! Doctor!”
Her voice was raw and hoarse, barely more than a desperate rasp as she tried to sit up.
A nurse hurried into the room, her face set in a mask of professional calm.
“What’s wrong? Is there something you need? The doctor’s off duty now, but you can tell me.”
Queenie grabbed the nurse’s arm, her nails digging into the soft flesh, eyes wide with terror and one last glimmer of hope.
“Nurse—my baby! What happened to my baby? He’s okay, isn’t he? Please, tell me he’s alright!”
The nurse’s expression hardened just a fraction as she gently pulled her arm free, her voice brisk and cool, with just a trace of impatience.
