“No... I don’t believe it... He wouldn’t do this to me...”
Queenie kept muttering under her breath, her words barely more than a whisper. Suddenly, with a desperate jerk, she yanked the IV needle from the back of her hand. Bright beads of blood welled up instantly from the puncture.
A wave of agony shot through her abdomen, mingling with the sharp sting in her hand, and cold sweat broke out across her forehead. But she was far beyond caring about pain.
She threw back the covers and staggered out of bed, barely managing to steady herself. She didn’t even stop to put her shoes on properly—she just bolted from the hospital room, wild-eyed, crashing through the doors and running barefoot toward the hospital’s main entrance.
She had to find Julian. Right now.
He couldn’t just cut her off like this. He couldn’t.
“Ms. Shaw! Ms. Shaw, wait! You haven’t paid your bill!” A nurse’s anxious voice called after her, slicing through her haze of panic.
Queenie froze, the sharp, mundane reminder yanking her back to reality.
She took a shaky breath, swallowing her humiliation. Forcing herself to stand tall, she turned and walked to the payment counter, trying—desperately—to salvage the last shreds of her dignity.
Digging into her bag, she pulled out a bank card and all but flung it onto the counter, her voice still carrying that familiar, haughty edge, though she was clearly trembling and weak.
“Seriously, as if I’d ever stiff you on the bill. Just swipe the card. Hurry up.”
The nurse took the card without expression, swiped it through the terminal, and then shook her head.
“This card’s declined.”
Queenie stared at her, momentarily stunned. Then she raised her voice, indignant.
“That’s impossible! Try it again!”
She was convinced it was just a faulty machine.
The nurse obliged, running the card a second time. The result didn’t change.
“It’s definitely not working. Miss, if you could try another card or another payment method, please. Let’s not waste anyone’s time.”
“You’re the one wasting my time!” Queenie snapped, her embarrassment morphing into fury. She yanked out a credit card and shoved it at the nurse. “Here! Use this one. Hurry up!”
