But the dumbest part was Jasper ditching his fiancée to “rescue” Lydia. Nobody made him leave. He had no one to blame but himself.

Tybalt glared at his son. “The guy who dragged you out of the water was Preston, not Lydia. You don’t owe her squat. We’ve already given the Woods more than enough. If you keep acting like a fool, then forget about ever running this family.”

Thinking about the Woods that Jasper let go, Tybalt grew gloomy.

He didn’t buy for a second that the Woods were innocent tonight.

They’d already taken a fat payoff before and still weren’t satisfied. They kept stirring things up with Lydia. In his eyes, the Woods didn’t even deserve to stick around in Liberty City anymore.

If Sterling hadn’t shown up, Tybalt wouldn’t have bothered with them. But right now, he just needed someone to dump his anger on.

Jasper was his son, the Lancasters were tied too closely to them, and Sterling was way out of reach. So the Woods became the easy punching bag.

The Woods were hired to play their role, then bribed to flip. They thought they were smart for pulling it off and walking away with twice the money. They were too busy celebrating that they had no idea trouble was closing in.

Sylvia looked between her raging husband and her upset son. Her irritation toward Lydia started bubbling up.

Another worry gnawed at her. “Mr. Romero clearly cares a lot about Claudia. But after tonight, Claudia and Lydia are done with each other. If Lydia marries into our family, will Mr. Romero come after us because of her?”

“Lydia isn’t marrying in!” Jasper snapped, his usually gentle face full of anger.

But Tybalt was focused on the second half of Sylvia’s question. He turned to his son.

As Claudia’s boyfriend, Jasper should’ve known better than anyone where she and Sterling truly stood.
