Sterling thought to himself, This Rosebud of mine, now that she’s lost her thorns, is just so sweet and delicate.
She worries about me, doesn’t want me to go back and cook, and even makes sure I have most of the jacket
to sit on.
Sterling felt a tingle at his fingertips.
“Ah-”
Claudia squeaked in surprise. In an instant, she found herself off the ground, and before she knew it, he had settled on the jacket with her now sitting in his lap.
“This way, we save more space, right?”
His breath was warm against her neck as he spoke in his deep, teasing voice.
Claudia’s eyes went wide.
“Just so you know, if the fried chicken gets your clothes greasy, don’t come yelling at me.”
Sitting in a cuddling position was one thing. She wouldn’t complain.
But eating fried chicken and hot dogs in this position–was this even proper?
Sterling paused, then laughed softly and pinched her cheek.
That was the Claudia he knew. Classic, practical Claudia.
Thanks to his long arms, he just pulled her close and opened the food containers in front of them.
More than once, Claudia tried to squirm away from his arms, nervously watching to make sure he wouldn’t smear any grease onto her dress.

Claudia had Sterling sit properly on the jacket, then stretched out her legs and put them together.
She patted his strong, muscular calves and sat right down on them, satisfied.
This was perfect–they were still sitting together, but still had a little distance.
Sterling leaned back on his hands, stretching out and letting her do what she wanted.

Once she got comfortable, he playfully lifted one of his feet, making her bounce like she was
on a seesaw.
That earned him a glare from Claudia.
She slapped his leg and warned, “Sterling, don’t be childish.”
He just hummed in amusement, the sound low in his throat.
Maybe it was finally having her grievances out in the open, but Claudia was in a great mood tonight.
The driver had thoughtfully brought back all kinds of drinks. Claudia tore into the fried chicken and hot dogs, excitedly tasting each bite.
For the good ones, she finished herself. For the ones she didn’t like, she took a sip and tossed it to Sterling.
Sterling was someone who could hold his liquor. He never got drunk, and he never turned anything down from Claudia.
He played the perfect drinking buddy.
After bottles and cans littered the grass, Sterling checked on Claudia. She was still perched on his lap, resting her chin in her hands and giggling.
“You’re pretty happy, huh?”
Claudia nodded slowly, once, then again.
