While he was debating whether or not to step in, she calmly pulled a knife and a set of lockpicks out of her backpack, picked the lock herself, and climbed out the window.

He suddenly burst out laughing.

In the hallway, he met her gaze. Her eyes were as dark as a bottomless abyss, yet strangely clear.

When she saw him at the door, she showed no reaction to his cold indifference. She simply brushed past and headed for the competition hall, her back straight and proud.

Curiosity got the better of him, and he followed her.

He watched calmly as she crushed all the boys in the next round of competition. Whether they were jealous of her talent or admired her for her looks, she beat them all without mercy.

Because of what had happened earlier, her clothes were wrinkled and there was still some dust on her face, making her look less than presentable. But on that stage, she outshone everyone.

Every single one of those boys lost. They hung their heads in defeat.

He followed her outside and saw her drag each of those troublemaking boys into the men’s restroom, dunking their heads in the sink and holding them there.

Other boys who just wanted to use the bathroom watched the scene in horror, sneaking nervous glances at each other.

Soon, nobody dared go in.

He watched with quiet amusement, even playing lookout for her.

He didn’t know how the school had explained the incident. Maybe it was because Claudia was a frontrunner for the championship, and the boys didn’t want to embarrass themselves, that the teacher in charge quietly swept it under the rug.

He watched as the girl’s sister paced outside the restroom, growing more and more anxious, but there was nothing she could do to stop what was happening to the boys.

He hurried outside to look for it, and at the hotel entrance, he happened to see a couple picking up a child–it was the girl’s sister. Even at such a young age, she already seemed cunning and calculating.

They seemed to be waiting for someone else.

The girl hesitantly told her parents that her younger sister had gotten into a fight with a bunch of boys and stormed off.

The couple were angry and didn’t ask for details. They scolded the girl briefly for causing trouble. Then they turned to comfort her sister, telling her they had already booked a restaurant to celebrate her win. Then, they left for the restaurant without hesitation.

Frederick laughed.

He remembered that the girl had won the quiz by a landslide, while her sister had just barely managed the consolation prize.

He stood beneath the eaves outside for a while, unsure of what to feel about the episode.

Sure enough, it wasn’t long before the girl came out, backpack slung over her shoulder.

He knew that most schools loaded their students onto buses and left after the event.

If she was still here, someone must have told her she’d be picked up.

He watched as she rose onto her toes, peered through the rain, then dropped her head in disappointment and shuffled her feet.

About 20 minutes later, she checked the time again. After a moment of resolve, she pulled out her phone from her bag and called someone.
