She never should have given Sterling a chance to escape in the first place.
Now that he’d grown claws, of course, he was coming back to get them.
Donovan had an eye for talent. With Sterling’s help, he accomplished more than several generations of Romeros ever had.
Now, the old–timers had to answer to someone a generation younger.
Julian said warmly, “Sterling, I’m here today to discuss a mutually beneficial opportunity.”
No matter what Sterling and Winnie’s true relationship was, the Lloyds always kept things friendly on the surface.
“I heard you recently bid on the Emosa Project. Too bad you didn’t get it. Since you’re interested and the Lloyds can’t take on the whole thing alone, how about we work together? The Lloyds and the Romeros can join forces.”
Honestly, if it weren’t for Corbin’s connections, Julian might not have been able to outbid Sterling at all.
Now he was just using the Emosa Project to get on Sterling’s good side.
The Emosa Project attracted too much attention. Letting Sterling in was a peace offering, and it would split the risk.
And once their interests were tied together, their relationship would naturally grow closer.
Getting rid of Sterling wasn’t so simple anymore. Building ties was the smart move.
In fact, Corbin had sent Julian on a mission.
Sterling had managed to help elevate Corbin’s political rival, and who knew what other tricks he might have up his sleeve? Corbin was worried, so he told Julian to offer Sterling a slice of the pie.
But even with all this profit on the table, Sterling refused to take the bait.
Sterling smiled. “If the Lloyds have the ability to take on the project, you guys must be capable of completing it. I’ve never been one to covet what’s on someone else’s plate, so I’ll sit this one
out.”
Julian almost lost his composure.

What did he mean by coveting someone else’s plate?
Was he talking about the project, or was he taking a jab at the Lloyds?
“You sure you don’t want to reconsider?” he pressed.
“I never regret my decisions,” Sterling replied crisply.
Julian gave him a long look and rose to his feet, lips pressed together. “Forgive me for overstepping. Maybe next time we can work together.”
“Clint, please see Mr. Lloyd out.” Sterling’s face didn’t reveal a thing.
Julian had shown up brimming with confidence, but left with nothing but polite goodbyes.
Outside the Romero Corp building, his face fell.
He glanced back at the tower, squinting at the glare.
Four years ago, when the barely matured Sterling broke Quinton’s leg, their instincts had been right. Sterling had never planned on letting the Lloyds off easy.
Maybe it was time to rethink their plans and come up with a new strategy.
