Chapter 28 Dangerous Encounters
“I don’t agree.” He rejected her flat out.
Claudia had nothing to say to his self–directed declarations.
But he even gave her reasoning a moment’s thought. “Feelings can be cultivated.”
Though in his mind, it wasn’t necessary. Interests made the firmest bond.
“I haven’t agreed to anything.”

Her phone lit up on the table. Sterling rose to his feet. “I’m leaving in an hour. You have plenty of time to think. When you’ve made up your mind, call me. Love I can’t guarantee, but in action I’ll discipline myself to be a proper husband.”
“And if I don’t agree?”
“Then keep thinking. I only accept one answer.”
From anyone else, it would have been arrogance. From Sterling, it was a statement of fact–he had the weight to back it.
Claudia couldn’t shake the sense that she had already stepped into a trap.
“Wait, you were leaving anyway. Then why throw such a fit when I asked earlier? You even turned it back on me.”
Sterling spread his hands innocently. “Leaving for business and being pushed out so you can make room for another man–those aren’t the same thing.”
“I wasn’t pushing you out. And what do you mean by ‘another man‘?”
“A man who covets someone else’s wife.”
“Mr. Romero, you’re slipping into character way too quickly.”
He bent down suddenly and kissed her forehead. “Just rehearsing early.”
Claudia was too slow to dodge, catching it head–on.
“Sterling!” she snapped through clenched teeth.
“Be good. I’m going to pack.”
Sometimes he was shamelessly deaf when he wanted to be.

Watching her storm away and slain the door, Sterling’s eyes glinted with amusement.
He wasn’t worried. The Lancaster family fools would eventually shove her straight into his
arms.
Her only support, her only ally, her closest partner–he was already looking forward to it with an almost giddy anticipation.
At first he had chosen her for her boldness, her nerve, and that flash of madness that mirrored his own. But after nearly a month together, he thought maybe she would bring him more surprises still.
This contract wife–he was very satisfied.
The night Sterling flew abroad on business, Claudia–after a month of being cooped up taking care of him–finally came out at Whitney’s insistence.
In the bustling bar, Whitney smoothly claimed a booth and scolded,
“You’ve been holed up so long you’re practically sprouting mushrooms. Anyone else would think you had a gold mine stashed in that little apartment of yours.”
No gold mine. Just a benefactor.
Claudia stayed silent.
Because Sterling had been hunted, she hadn’t told Whitney about him, afraid of dragging her into danger. She had used deadlines as an excuse, keeping Whitney from visiting.
Now there was no need for secrecy. She laid out the past month honestly.
Whitney’s commentary was nonstop. “Damn! So that’s why you’ve been so quiet–turns out you’ve been busy with something huge!”
Her eyes shone. “You’ve got the Romero family’s golden boy in your hands. Doesn’t that mean you can strut across Liberty City sideways now?”
Claudia’s fingers circled the rim of her glass. “I haven’t decided yet.”
Just moments ago Whitney had been joking, but now her expression sobered. “All that talk about crushing everyone is just for laughs, Claudia. Lydia isn’t worth your whole life. If you really want to deal with her, just wait. I’ll take over from my old man, and I’ll use the Sawyer family to take on the Lancasters. Your sister here can support you for the rest of your life. Sterling may be powerful, but the Romero family is torn apart with schemes and rivalries. He

himself is unpredictable, ruthless. They say Henry and his son were both destroyed recently- one a vegetable, the other a cunuch. There’s no proof, but the rumors all point to Sterling. He’s. a man without mercy. For now, standing by his side is fine, but what if one day you clash? With a man like that. I can’t feel at case about you being with him.”
