But Claudia was even faster on her feet. “I’ll go call for help!”
Quinton and Winnic shut their eyes, completely defeated.

It was bad enough that they’d beaten each other half to death, but having it all exposed in front of everyone? That was even worse than dying.
Claudia left the room with a little smile on her lips.
Spotting the anxious maids and servants in the distance, she waved them over. “Mr. Quinton and Mrs. Winnie got into a fight and both got hurt. They really don’t want to see anyone right now, so you can wait a bit before cleaning up. I’m going to let the others know.”
With that, she strolled toward the main hall with a bounce in her step.
Inside the banquet room, Donovan stood at the cake, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, ready to cut it.
He glanced around, then looked at Sterling. “Where’s your girlfriend?”
Sterling’s lips curled into a fond smile. “She’s off having fun.”
Donovan muttered under his breath, “She’s got no sense of responsibility at all.”
Wasn’t she the one who insisted on staying close while he cut the cake?
Now she was nowhere to be seen, and it made him oddly uneasy.
“Mr. Donovan!”
Speak of the devil.
A clear, bright voice rang out from the doorway. Even though the speaker tried to keep it under control, it was impossible to hide the trace of delight in her tone.
Everyone turned to look.
Donovan’s heart skipped a beat, and his hand shook.
The knife he’d aimed at the cake landed right in the middle of the word “Happy” on “Happy

Before he could stop her, Claudia, as cheerful as a songbird, announced, “Something terrible has happened!”
“Sterling’s father and his stepmother just had a fight!”
Everyone thought they must have misheard.
Sterling’s father and his stepmother? That means Quinton and his wife, Winnie, right?
Oh, wait, that’s Quinton’s second wife, to be precise.
Claudia’s use of “stepmother” reminded everyone–Winnie had started out as the mistress, using her family background to force her way into the marriage.
But still, one of them was a delicate socialite, the other was a disabled man in a wheelchair. How could those two get into a fight?
“Winnie wouldn’t do that. What exactly happened?” Corbin, Winnie’s brother, was the first to
react.
Winnie could get a little fiery sometimes, but fighting her husband? That wasn’t her style.
And no matter what, Quinton should at least know better than to hit a woman.
But as soon as he said those words, Corbin regretted it.
Claudia looked like she’d been waiting for someone to ask. She perked up, eager to fill everyone in.
With an innocent shrug, she said, “I’m not sure either. When I walked in, Winnie was yelling at Quinton for being useless. She said his legs didn’t work, so neither did, um, a certain part of him. She said he wasn’t a real man and that she’d wasted decades living like a widow.
“Then, Quinton called her shameless and heartless. He accused her of seducing married men and even going after his kids from his first marriage.
“I tried to calm them down, but then–bam!-they just started fighting.”
She clapped her hands for emphasis, her big eyes blinking as if she was genuinely shocked.
The whole room was stunned.
Holy crap! What kind of family secrets had they just heard?
