He tilted his head. “Ms. Lancaster asked me to deliver a message. She said she had carried the blame for someone’s death for 17 years. Whatever kindness she owed you, she’s paid back. From now on, don’t try to make peace. Don’t even say you’re sorry. Because she’ll never forgive you.”

As long as her last card wasn’t revealed, she could still struggle to stay in the game.

“Eight?” Lottie laughed—a loud, painful sound. She wrenched her wrist free and swung the knife. “My Claudia was six. She was only six!
