Her mother had gone back to her family, and when she returned, she handed Kamila this invitation, telling her this was her last chance.
After the birthday banquet, she had used the excuse of visiting her aunt to go to the Romeros‘ several times, and never ran into Sterling.
This was her first time seeing him again after days, and at his side–unchanged as ever–was still the same person.
Kamila didn’t know how to describe what she felt; sometimes she thought he might as well be a flirt who spread his affections around–it would be better than this unshakable, ironclad loyalty.
Claudia picked up the last bit of feed from Sterling’s palm to toss to the birds, then glanced at him with a smile. “Sterling, we’re practically a sightseeing stop by now.”
One after another–what a crowd.
Sterling smiled too and tapped a particularly tame little bird perched on her hand.
“Annoying flies.”
“Huh?”
Claudia spotted another familiar face.
She nudged Sterling’s arm, then nodded toward the man with his back turned to them, lazily sea–fishing. “I’m starting to wonder if this yacht’s going to make it back to shore in one piece.”
Such a grab bag of guests. The hosts really knew how to send invitations.
Sterling didn’t know how to respond.
Just as they had noticed those quietly watching them, Simon, in the middle of fishing, felt Claudia’s direct stare.
He angled his head their way; seeing Sterling and Claudia feeding seabirds, surprise flickered in his eyes.
They nodded to each other across the distance, with no intention of hanging out together.
Claudia wasn’t exactly familiar with Sterling’s older cousin; counting it up, she’d only seen him

once at the birthday banquet.
They said he strongly resembled the Romero uncle who’d passed–Leon.

Unlike Sterling’s cool, feral edge and Frederick’s mild detachment, Simon carried himself like a composed gentleman from an old house–the result of no small effort from his mother, Yvonne.
And that mother and son seemed to have made the correct choice at every turn of history.
After Leon died, with the old man’s backing and the Lains’s support, they held their ground in the Romeros. When Sterling burst onto the scene, they pulled back at the right time and took another path. While the Romeros tore at each other, they stayed prudent, low–key, and out of the fray.
Through all the chaos, their little boat always sailed steadily.
If not for who they were, she would have called that pair wise.
But she remembered clearly what Sterling had told her. “Including him, there isn’t a single good person in the Romeros.”
Claudia was instinctively wary of him.
Just then, Simon reeled in his line, dropped the fish into a bucket, rinsed his hands, and walked
over.
He stopped before the two of them, who were idly taking in the sea breeze, and lifted the bucket. “Want to try a few casts? The haul’s decent.”
His tone was ordinary, just like the day he’d found Claudia teasing Donovan; he’d simply said “Grandpa” and steered the moment away without leaving fingerprints.
Claudia smiled, eyes crescenting. “I’ll pass. I can’t sit still.”
