Shattered Rose He Held On Tight

Chapter 37 A Fragile Memory

Claudia’s throat felt tight. No words would come out.

Lydia’s eyes softened with a look of nostalgia. She gently touched the smiling face of the woman in the painting. She was beautiful, wasn’t she? Just as beautiful as your mom. Claudia, after all these years, do you still remember what she looked like?

Of course Claudia remembered.

That day had changed her life.

Zoey had married the wrong man. Compared to her sister, whose life kept rising higher, it was like one lived in heaven while the other was trapped in hell.

Proud as she was, Zoey had grown distant from Lottie for a long time.

It wasn’t until the truth about her husband’s abuse came out that Lottie and Wilson helped her get a divorce. After that, Zoey moved back with her parents.

She only visited the Lottie now and then.

But those visits weren’t oftenthe sharp contrast between their lives always left a sting.

Lydia was two years older than Claudia. When they were kids, Lydia was quiet and moody. She was always carrying hidden bruises, shrinking into the shadows like a ghost.

Sometimes Claudia noticed both Zoey and Lydia secretly watching her.

She never understood what their gaze meantonly that it was heavy and complicated.

Back then Claudia had been lively, kind, and full of sympathy. She once picked fresh flowers from the garden and carried them, all smiles, to her sad and fragile Zoey. Aunt Zoey, if you take these flowers, you’ll feel happy again!

Her bright, innocent grin stood in sharp contrast to Lydia’s early maturity and silence.

The sight broke Zoey’s heart.

Little Claudia liked her delicate Aunt Zoey very much. Zoey was gentle to her. Sometimes, Zoey even showed her more affection than she gave Lydia.

Lottie would often scold, Don’t spoil her too much.”

Zoey would laugh and say, Claudia’s a lucky child. She was born to live a good life.”

Chapter 37 A Fragile Memory

On Claudia’s sixth birthday, Zoey came early with her daughter.

The kids played together. Claudia made sure to show Lydia her kitten.

It was a stray she had rescued and slowly tamed with patience. The little orange cat was sweet and wellbehaved. Her parents had finally agreed to let her keep it.

But Lydia didn’t like it. When Claudia wasn’t looking, Lydia kicked the kitten hard and even tried to stab it with a little knife.

Claudia was furious. She shoved Lydia to the ground to keep her away.

Lydia burst into loud sobs. Soon, the adults came rushing in. Claudia quickly told her parents what Lydia had done.

But Lydia held up her hand. A long red scratch from the cat stood out on her pale skin.

No one believed Claudia. Lydia was always the good, obedient childhow could she be cruel to a kitten?

Maybe, they thought, Lydia had only kicked it after being scratched, out of fear.
