Donovan’s voice grew weaker and weaker until his hands fell limp, and the heart monitor flatlined.
The sound of the Romeros crying filled the hospital room.
After Donovan’s burial, every branch of the family packed up their children and moved out of Romero Manor one after another.
They’d stayed there before for two reasons. First, it was a status symbol. Second, it was easier to stay close to Donovan and charm their way into the inheritance.
Now that everything had settled and Donovan was gone, these relatives–whose ties with Sterling were already paper–thin–had no face left to linger in the house.
Honestly, they all thought the place was cursed anyway.
Once, the manor had been noisy and full of hidden drama. Now it was quiet and empty.
Sterling and Claudia didn’t move back either. They still preferred the villa Sterling had given her long ago–the only place that truly felt like home.
Morning sunlight streamed through the half–open curtains, spilling across the soft bed.
Claudia felt the light dance across her face and grumbled, burying her face against the bare chest beside her.
Sterling’s body moved instinctively, his hand sliding over her waist and pulling her close.
He fumbled around for the remote to close the curtains.
After searching for a while, he still couldn’t find it. Who knew where it ended up last night when things got a little too fun.
Annoyed by the light, Claudia bit him sleepily and mumbled, “This is all your fault. I told you not to mess around by the window.”
The tiny sting snapped Sterling fully awake.
“Baby, easy,” he said in a low, teasing voice, shifting slightly.

Claudia blinked, half–awake, and saw the aftermath of their battle–red marks shaped just like her teeth scattered across his skin. Some hadn’t faded yet, and a few were close to breaking the skin.
She kissed him softly and whispered, “There, it doesn’t hurt.”
Sterling laughed and held her down. “Then kiss somewhere else.”
Claudia nudged his leg under the blanket, hinting for him to quit while he was ahead.
But when she looked down at herself, her confidence returned. She was clearly the one who had suffered more.
She had begged him to stop, but he wouldn’t listen, clinging to her like a wild animal. Her whole body had ached, and she’d cried until she had no tears left.
“No,” she muttered, pressing a hand against him.
“Baby,” he murmured against her neck, voice muffled as he grew clingy again, hands wandering.
A knock came from the door, one after another. Claudia leaned back, frowning, her fingers tangling in his hair.
“No, we can’t, we have to go out soon, mm … ”
“I’ll keep track of the time,” he said against her skin.
Outside, Daron was wandering the hallway. As he passed the bedroom door, he heard a few familiar sounds–half crying, half something else.
Well, his humans were playing their usual morning game again.
He shook his head and trotted off, paws pattering in rhythm with the growing intensity behind the door.
Sunlight danced across the room, brighter and harder to hide from than last night’s soft moonlight.
Being shy was useless–it only encouraged him more.
The blanket was soon forgotten, crumpled up and tossed under the bed along with the missing
remote.
