Claudia had already said it. This was something her grandmother had wanted her to have.

Everything that happened that night left Wilson uneasy. Deep down, he also wanted to keep something in his hands that could hold his youngest daughter back.

“This bracelet is for Claudia,” he said, “but it’s only meant to be given at marriage. Today’s birthday gift is not this.”

He gave Hubert a meaningful glance.

Everyone instinctively turned to look at Lydia, who was shrinking behind Wilson and Lottie.

She had worn the bracelet on purpose, just to provoke Claudia. Something she had once desperately longed for but could never have was already hers to flaunt.
